Regardless of the opponent, the offense showed something.

The Hawks are back baby! The offense is purring, the defense is nasty, and special teams for the most part is clicking on all cylinders!

While only a few of those are true for this season, for one Saturday in October, the Hawkeyes were a complete football team. I don’t know what kind of Hocus Pocus Brian Ferentz was able to whip up but the offense looked more than confident. It probably had a lot to do with Northwesters defense being ranked at or near the bottom of the barrel in most defensive categories, but we as Hawk fans do not have the luxury this year to scoff at offensive competence. Is that in and of itself an indictment on how poor the unit has played up to this point? Sure. We are left to hope that the performance on Saturday signifies growth from the unit and that hopefully they are slowly coming out of the darkness in time for the stretch run.

Here is a look at who’s stock is rising and a shocking Hawkeye who is “falling”.

Stock Up

Spencer Petras

My god it happened. After last weeks benching against Ohio. St, I never thought this moment would come for Spencer Petras. Regardless of whether or not you think he should be the starter, Spencer played a great game. In one of his best performances as a Hawkeye, Petras’ stat line read 21/30 for 220 yards and (gasp) a touchdown pass! Spencer delivered ball after ball right on the money to his intended targets. In the first half alone he went 14/18. That line is even better considering two of those were dropped, including one for a score, and a throw away. A larger story coming out of the Northwestern win for Spencer was that it appeared as though he was reading the defense in real time for once. His play didn’t appear as scripted on where he was throwing the football. That’s evidenced by eight different Hawkeyes catching passes on Saturday. I also liked that Spencer pulled the ball down and got a little something a few times instead of taking a sack. One of those improvisations resulted in a 17 yard gain to Monte Pottebaum as well. No Northwestern is not good, but hopefully this game can instill some confidence in the Hawkeye signal caller.

Arland Bruce IV

Finally! It took until game number eight but we were all finally reminded of why all of us were so high on Arland coming into the season. Bruce on the day recorded 2 catches for only 19 yards but got 3 touches in the run game and it paid off. Bruce took one of his sweeps 23 yards to the house later in the game. This kid is a playmaker who needs even more touches in the upcoming weeks but just like Spencer, hopefully his confidence was boosted Saturday.

Nico Rah-gah-ee-nee

Another Hawkeye receiver who saw their stock rise was Nico Ragaini. The senior had his best game of the year hauling in 4 receptions for 66 yards. This marked only the second time this year a Hawkeye wideout has lead the team in receiving yards, the other was also Nico against Nevada. It was awesome to see Spencer identify Nico on some of the short crossers and then deliver a ball to where Ragaini could showcase his toughness and athletic ability after the catch. Like Bruce, Ragaini’s success (or lack there of) will have a huge influence on how Iowa finishes out the 2022 campaign.

Kaleb Johnson

RB1 is officially locked up. The true freshmen may be the Hawkeyes best home run threat within the offense. I continue to be blown away by the ease in which Johnson picks up chunks of yardage. He always appears to be operating at 60% until you realize he is running past everybody and they aren’t catching up. Could he run with a little more forward lean? Maybe. I seem to remember however that Melvin Gordan had a very similar running style and that worked out alright.

Kalebs ability to not chop his feet and immediately get north and south is so refreshing and bolds well for this offense. It’s starting to become evident as well that this kid knows what he’s doing in pass protection. If Johnson can become a legitimate every down back, the Hawkeyes have themselves something special.

Sam Laporta

Another Saturday sees Laporta lead the Hawks in receptions. Theres not a ton to say at this point about the senior except I would really like to see him haul in touchdowns during the final games of his career. If he can do that and help lead Iowa to a salvaged season against 5 straight West division rivals, I believe his name will finally be able to be mentioned with former Hawkeye greats as being truly elite.

Offensive Line

I lumped them together when they were awful and I’ll do the same this first time they found success. This young unit was solid Saturday. They opened plenty of holes for Johnson and Leshon Williams to run through and that subsequently allowed Iowa to hoard time of possession. The Hawkeye’s best 5 at the moment are Richman at LT, Colby LG, Jones C, Stephens RG, and Plumb at RT. Plumb, while he has struggled throughout his career, now has his chance to become a classic Iowa story under Ferentz as a Senior who struggled throughout his career but finally had the light bulb turn on during his final season. Northwestern came in to the game Saturday with a very porous run defense it must be noted, but I am still eager to see if the same success can be replicated next week at Purdue.

Riley Moss

It dawned on me that I forgot to mention Moss last week in my ode to Seniors on the defense. Somewhat easy to overlook this season, Moss had himself a game Saturday. Riley on the day had 5 tackles togo along with 2 passes defended as well as a devastating hit on Evan Hull. He hasn’t had the raw numbers he did last year, but Moss has proven his value each and every week for this Hawkeye defense. The next assignment? Stop Charlie Jones.

Jay Higgins

The heir to Campbells throne at middle linebacker did his best to imitate #31 on Saturday. Higgins had hiss best game as a Hawkeye tallying 12 tackles on the day. If there was any silver lining to Jestin Jacobs injury this year, it’s been the extended run of playing time Higgins has received. The experience should bode well for next years linebacking core.

The Defensive Line

There were too many guys who had great days Saturday so I’m mentioning all of them. For as bad as Northwestern is, running back Evan Hull was still among the conferences leaders in total offense per game. on Saturday, the Wildcat tailback managed only 32 yards on 11 carries while adding just 25 yards on 5 receptions. Thats dominance from a unit that also managed 6 sacks on the day. Joe Evans, LVN, Deontae Craig, Noah Shannon, Ethan Hurkett, and Logan Lee all notched sacks on Wildcat dual threat QB Brendan Sullivan. Coming into the game, Northwestern was 18th in the country in sacks allowed. The fact that Iowa dominated this offensive line in the fashion that it did bodes well for this weekends game in West Lafayette where pressure from the line will be of utmost importance.

Drew Stevens

This kid week in and week out continues to make us wonder why the heck he wasn’t declared the seasons starter from day one? The true freshman connected on all 4 of his field goal attempts including a career high 54 yarder. I’m going to compare Drew to two past Iowa kickers. First, I think he hits a great ball. His 54 yard boot had beautiful slow rotation across an even access. The ease in which he delivered that slow rotating ball reminded me of Mike Meyers. Hopefully he’s better in the clutch than Meyers but there is evidence of that in my second comparison. As a kicker, people think you are suppose to remain a robot throughout the entirety of the game never letting your emotions get to high or too low. However, the kickers who have the ability celebrate their triumphs as Stevens did after his 54 yarder often end up being elite. Stevens celebration of fist pumps at the logo reminded me of my all-time favorite Hawkeye Nate Kaeding. Nate toed that line of being super excitable yet cold as ice in the clutch. If that is what coach Woods has in Stevens for the next four years, Iowa may have an all timer on their hands.

Stock Down

Tory Taylor

It’s blasphemy on my part to throw a fellow punter into the stock down category but Tory had another weird day. My theory behind his shanked 13 yard punt in the first half is that he was so out of whack from not always having to go out on the field. So yes, I suppose we can blame the offense for something else then. In all seriousness though, Iowa will need the Tory Taylor from the beginning of the year to show up down the stretch as every game from here on out should promise to be close.

Progress, but Northwestern is really, really, really bad

For a day all things were right with Hawkeye football. It was a beautiful 66 degree sunny day at Kinnick Stadium. Our Hawks put 33, 33?!?!?, points on the board, and the good guys beat the Fighting Pat Fitzgerald’s 33-13. After a bye week and some elitist comments from Head Coach Kirk Ferentz, it was terrific to actually get to a football game. I picked against our squad based on having zero confidence in our offense. I did not take into account just how awful Northwestern is. They are bad. Like, bad, bad. I think I need to go back to picking against us. Superstitious, I am.

Yoda approves of a Hawkeye win

Anyway, let’s get back to a traditional report card after last week’s variation.

Offense:

Dear, Brian Ferentz. We are not on good terms. You still must go. I do like that Iowa used some jet motion and three wide receivers carried the ball. Good job with that.

QB: B

As stated earlier Northwestern left much to be desired for a B1G opponent. Not that I’m complaining about getting the win. The Hawks needed that in the worst way. I was and wasn’t surprised that Spencer Petras got the start. I felt that Alex Padilla should have been given the opportunity; he was fed to the wolves at the Shoe. Petras played well and deserves to feel great about his performance. Big Spence was 21-30 for 220 yards with one touchdown and zero interceptions. I wrote on Friday that I wanted Iowa’s quarterback to play well, whoever it may be. It feels like Hawkeye fans have been more frustrated with Kirk and Brian than with Spencer Petras. Petras moved up in the QBR rankings. He is now ranked 119/126.

RB: B+

Iowa has transitioned to Kaleb Johnson and Leshon Williams as our primary backs. They will continue to improve the more work they get. Johnson had 88 yards on 14 carries (6.3). Williams ran for 43 yards on 11 carries (3.9). Leshon Williams was also involved in the passing game. He caught 3 balls for 19 yards. Brian changed things up, and our offense looked like it resembled an offense, so there’s that.

WR: B-

Iowa’s receivers did more than just go through the motions; a nice change from past weeks. Nico Ragaini led the group with four catches and 66 yards. Brody Brecht hauled in three balls for 18 yards, and Diante Vines flashed some ability catching two passes for 22 yards. Arland Bruce IV ran the ball three times for 27 yards and a touchdown. Vines and Monte Pottebaum with the great blocks to spring Bruce for six points.

Nico Ragaini and Brody Brecht combined to rush for 16 yards.

TE: A-

There are a few constants in college football. One of these is that Iowa is Tight End University. TEU had another good day on Duke Slater Field. Sam LaPorta caught five balls for 53 yards. Luke Lachey had one catch for a six yard touchdown.

It’s been a while since Iowa threw a forward pass that was caught in an area called an end zone. I’m going to do some research to determine how many points this scores.

OL: B

Spencer Petras was sacked once and Northwestern had two quarterback hurries (QBH). Other than that, Iowa’s backs had some holes/creases that haven’t been there in some time. Iowa rushed for 173 yards with an average of 4.8 yards per carry. That’s winning football.

Defense:

Speaking of constants in college football? How about Iowa’s defense? Iowa’s defenders show up every game (w/ the exception of hated Purdue) and take care of business.

DL: A

Iowa’s defensive line wracked up six of Iowa’s seven quarterback sacks on the day. Joe Evans showed out again with five tackles and a sack. Deontae Craig collected three tackles including a sack and 2 TFL’s. Lukas Van Ness was also active; he had four tackles, with 1 sack and 1.5 TFL’s. Northwestern ran the ball 37 times for 18 yards (.5 yards/carry). Incredible.

LB: A

Jay Higgins has been lurking in the background waiting for his opportunity; he has taken it and run with it. Higgins led the team with 12 tackles. I wrote about him a few years ago and he was a tackling machine in high school. That holds true today. If he gets his hands on you, you’re going down. Jack Campbell had nine tackles and Seth Benson collected six. These two are going to be tough to replace next year. Benson had a sack and 1.5 TFL.

DB/Cash: B

Northwestern threw for two touchdowns and 159 yards. Ten different Wildcats had receptions. Riley Moss led the defensive backs in tackles with five. Moss also had two pass break ups. Kaevon Merriweather snagged an interception.

Special Teams: B

Tory Taylor wanted to remind everyone that he is a human and not some awesome, Aussie god. He got the yips on his one punt attempt that went for 12 yards. Damn, that sounds like some Iowa State or Nebraska special teams s*$#. Drew Stevens banged four field goals and three extra points. Stevens’ longest field goal was a bomb from 54 yards out.

Stevens reminds me a little bit of Nate Kaeding. Arland Bruce IV had forty punt return yards.

Iowa played well and you should feel well

On a warm and sunny Saturday a few days before Halloween, the Iowa Hawkeyes came dressed to the party as a completely different football team. After a three game losing streak with a listless offense and a defense doing everything it can to hold it all together, the good guys finally put together the most complete performance of the 2022 season against one of the conferences worst teams.

And it’s okay to feel good about it.

Iowa defeated the Northwestern Wildcats 33-13 yesterday, and that score belies how one sided this game truly was. Iowa led 20-0 at halftime and gave up only two touchdowns on the day: one after a rare shanked punt by Tory Taylor and another on the final play of the game against the second string defense. Once Iowa showed it could move down the field into the red zone with relative ease on its first two drives, scoring on both, it felt like we could be treated to an honest to goodness enjoyable game.

Spencer Petras delivered is best performance since probably the first half of last season. He finished the day completing 21 of 30 attempts for 220 yards, with one passing and one rushing touchdown. He was sharp and for the most part made good decisions all game long. He had plenty of help. Sam LaPorta continued to be a favored target, but what really stood out in in this game was the greater use of wide receivers. Nico Ragaini, Diante Vines, Arland Bruce IV, and Brody Brecht all recorded two or more receptions, with Nico leading the pack with 66 yards on four catches.

This was all complemented with a strong running game which had good holes and running lanes most of the time. Overall, the Hawks gained 178 yards on the ground with Kaleb Johnson accounting for over half of them. LeShon Williams tallied 43 yards of his own and was more active in the passing game with three catches for 19 yards.

On the other side, the Iowa defense was a capital-P Problem for quarterback Brendan Sullivan and the Wildcat offense. While only snagging one takeaway, a Kaevon Merriweather interception late in the first half, the defense made mincemeat out of the Wildcat offensive line and sacked Sullivan seven times to the tune of -42 yards. Northwestern ended the game with only 18 rushing yards, but had somewhat better luck through the air, gaining 159 yards and two scores. The game was well enough in hand that the second string defense was able to come in for mop up duty late in the game. Even though they did give up a touchdown there was no chance Northwestern was going to crawl back and make it a game. This, finally, was a truly complementary performance by all three phases, setting the other up for success and pulling their own weight for all 60 minutes.

This is the part where you say, “Yes, but it was just Northwestern.”

And that’s fair. I said earlier that it’s okay to feel good, not that you have to. This wasn’t Iowa pulling off the upset against the Wolverines or Buckeyes. This was Iowa going up against a weaker opponent, imposing their will, and getting a comfortable victory and good vibes after a string of defeats. Doing it against a team notorious for stealing wins away from you makes it that much better.

I harbor no illusions that Iowa has suddenly transformed into a title contender or that Brian and Kirk have solved everything that has plagued the offense for too long. Many people will point out — and probably accurately — that Kirk will take this performance as an “I told you so” moment, that we were just so many doubting Thomases that didn’t have the full picture and therefore didn’t understand what had to be done. We likely have more Snarky Kirk to deal with for at least one more week, and Snarky Kirk is much more fun when his powers are used for good instead of against his own side.

However, that doesn’t mean we can’t feel good that we saw a nice performance out of a team that has been starving for one since last season. You can hem and haw all you want about the level of competition or what this will do to Kirk or Brian’s egos, but we only get twelve Saturdays with Hawkeye football a year and I’d much rather see more wins than losses regardless of the meta-commentary surrounding the program. You can choose to view this win through whatever lens you want to, but it’s still a win.

And it’s okay to feel good about it.

Can the Hawkeyes hold off the Wildcats? | Quinn Harris-USA TODAY Sports

It’s game time in Iowa City again!

It’s game time in Iowa City once again! After three weeks without football inside historic Kinnick Stadium, the Hawkeyes have returned home for a homecoming showdown with the Northwestern Wildcats.

In a wild twist of fate, the loser of today’s matchup will find themselves in last place in the Big Ten West. However, win or lose both teams will remain in the hunt for the Big Ten West title. This despite having decidedly losing records both in the conference and overall and both coming into the weekend riding long losing streaks.

Pat Fitzgerald has had Kirk Ferentz’s number over the years, and even year Northwestern has won the West the last two times. But Ferentz finds himself with his back against the wall and fighting not just for his legacy, but for his family.
After nearly a month away, the Iowa Hawkeyes are set to return home to take on the Northwestern Wildcats on homecoming in Iowa City!

The Hawkeyes are reeling after having their lunch money stolen in Columbus a week ago to extend their current losing streak to three games. Now they come home to historic Kinnick Stadium looking to turn things around for their season. But they’ll need to look better than they did in their last home matchup when they fell at the hands of the Michigan Wolverines.

This week, however, there is no top-5 team coming to Kinnick. Instead, Iowa gets to face off with a team perhaps reeling even more than the Hawkeyes. Northwestern comes into this matchup having lost their last seven games since taking down the Nebraska Cornhuskers in week one. That is to say, the Wildcats have not won a game this season when playing in this country.

The Hawkeyes look to turn things around in their season while continuing that trend for Northwestern in Kinnick today. As we prepare for kickoff, here’s a reminder of the details for today’s matchup:

Hawkeye fans have been ready for Alex Padilla for a while. | Joseph Maiorana-USA TODAY Sports

Does it even matter who is under center at this point?

There is a strange feeling being a Hawkeye fan these days. Things have clearly taken a turn for the worst this season with Iowa losing their last three games. In that span, the Hawkeye offense has managed just two touchdowns - both came in the fourth quarter against Michigan when things were largely out of hand.

The miserable on field performance from one third of the team has left fans and the media both asking pointed questions about who is to blame. Kirk Ferentz has been slow in making adjustments during the season as the Hawkeyes were the last team in the nation to give a second quarterback live game snaps when they finally inserted Alex Padilla into the lineup to start the second half against the Buckeyes. He has not only refused to make staff changes, but has been both defensive and snarky when faced with such questions.

The end result has been some mix of anger, frustration and eventually apathy among the Hawkeye faithful. We’re left wondering, genuinely, if it would be better for the team to simply lose games down the stretch to force the hand of either Kirk or Gary Barta. That sentiment stems from the utter stubbornness exhibited by Ferentz the elder to this point and his general lack of accountability when it comes to Brian’s role with the offense.

Do we really think Kirk would fire his son at the end of the season if the Hawkeyes manage to turn things around? What would it take for him to pull the trigger? These are not questions we should be forced to ask, yet here we are.

Similarly, everything we’ve seen on the field would lead most sane people no reason to ask whether Alex Padilla would be starting in place of Spencer Petras this weekend. Padilla, in his highly limited time under center, has not shown himself to be markedly better than Petras (and statistically he has been slightly worse), but he possesses enough mobility to at least mask some of the serious issues facing the offensive line and give this team a fighting chance to be better than dead last in the nation in total offense.

That’s why nearly every one of the respondents to this week’s poll question feels Padilla should start against Northwestern on Saturday afternoon.

But we heard all week that Spencer Petras was splitting first team reps with Padilla in practice. That can mean only one thing. Because we’ve heard all season that Petras has been the better practice player.

How could he not? The first team offense almost never faces the first team defense, according to Ferentz, and often times the QBs are being judged on their performance against air. Really.

So of course Petras, with his first team offense, looks better against backup defenders and air running an offense built around him than Padilla ever could with a group of second team players facing Iowa’s first team defense in an offense that is built for someone else’s strengths.

And splitting those reps all week means there is no chance, even if we do somehow get Padilla at some point Saturday, that Brian has put together a game plan built for Alex to succeed or accentuate what he does well. After all, that’s just backyard football. What’s the upside?

Despite the predictable frustration that is sure to ensue, more than two thirds of Hawkeye fans remain confident Iowa will emerge victorious on Saturday.

Perhaps that’s not saying much. More than 90% of fans expected Iowa to win this matchup during the pre-season. That was before Northwestern lost seven straight games before coming to Kinnick.

As it stands, the Wildcats have not won a single game on this continent. And yet they remain a viable contender in the Big Ten West, EVEN WITH A LOSS ON SATURDAY AND THE FOLLOWING WEEK AGAINST OHIO STATE. That’s how miserable this Hawkeye team and the division they play in has become.

Still, pessimism reigns supreme. Perhaps it’s that wishful thinking that losses piling up will actually force Kirk’s hand, but less than 10% of Hawkeye fans now think this team will finish with a winning season. Compare that to 65% who think Iowa will finish with their first losing record in a decade.
