The tale of the first half has been defense, turnovers, and field goals (and missed fields goals). Iowa opened the game with fumble, but the defense held and forced Michigan State to and early field goal. On MSU's next series, a Hawkeye bliz got home and forced Connor Cook to through a pass straight into the line and Josey Jewell was there to pick it off. Iowa's offense wasn't able to push it in and they kicked a FG to tie it up 3-3.
From there, Iowa has moved the ball pretty well. The run game has been decent and CJ Beathard has been making plays scrambling around and finding his receivers breaking off their routes. That however has led to just 1 other field goal. Iowa had another drive get all the way down to the goal line, but on third down after it looked like George Kittle had initially caught the call, he got drilled in the head by Riley Bullough's helmet on what could have been called targeting, dropped it and it fell on Bullough's back and another Spartan was able to pick it up for an interception.
Michigan State has had a shot at two long, 50+ yard, field goals and missed them both. Iowa has been stout against the run. The coverage has been pretty good. Iowa's defense needs to keep it up. And Iowa's offense needs to keep grinding and find a spot to take a shot down field.
The other story from the first half is that Jordan Canzeri suffered another injury. You have to just feel for the dude. He has been an amazing Hawkeye and has had to fight through so many injuries throughout his career. I hope it isn't serious and he can get healthy for the bowl/playoff game.
Let's Go Hawks!
