The dual purpose 5" secondary gun of choice for the USN was able to use radar fire control and a highly innovative radar proximity fuse to crush air attacks, and wasn't a slouch against other targets. Additionally, it made a really cool ring of fire at the end of the barrel when you shot it. Very cool.

It was in 1940. The Two Ocean Navy Act of 1940, and the Naval Act of 1938 provided the enormous expansion of the US Navy necessary to be able to fight on the far side of the world and defeat a near-peer adversary. Especially the 18 aircraft carriers provided for in the 1940 Act, as this got the ball rolling on building the Essex class carriers that came on the scene starting in late '42 and steadily thereafter.
