It’s a double-dose of Hawkeye hoops to open up 2024 as the Iowa women are here to save the day after the football team laid an egg on New Year’s Day and the men face a tall task on the road at Wisconsin to open the action today.

Lisa Bluder and the Hawkeye women are poised to return to Carver-Hawkeye Arena to play host to Michigan State as the look to continue their winning ways into the new year. Iowa is fresh off a beatdown of Minnesota just three days ago and has won ten straight, including their first two Big Ten matchups.

In their last outing, Iowa sent Minnesota packing with a 94-71 thrashing, and Caitlin Clark was the maestro orchestrating the symphony with a jaw-dropping 35-point, 10 assist performance. Clearly, the Hawkeyes aren’t just winning; they’re winning with style.

Michigan State also comes in riding a heater as they’ve won four straight, including a Big Ten road win at Penn State. The Spartans had a ridiculously balanced attack in that impressive 98-87 win, led by 21 points from Theryn Hallock off the bench. That comes after Julia Ayrault posted 32 points in the prior outing.

Moira Joiner leads the way for MSU, averaging 16.8 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Ayrault leads the Spartans with 7.3 rebounds per game while adding 14.1 points. DeeDee Hagemann makes it three in double figures for Michigan State at 14.3 ppg while leading the team with 4.2 assists per game. Joiner is a threat from deep, shooting 45% from beyond the arc as the Spartans average an impressive 92 points per game on the season.

They’ll need all of it tonight as they come to Carver to face a Hawkeye team that’s averaging 91 points per game themselves. While Caitlin Clark’s star power continues to surge as she leads the team in points, rebounds and assists at 30.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and 7.6 assists per game, the Hawkeyes continue to show some diversity with Hannah Stuelke and Kate Martin also in double figures at 14.4 and 12.1 points per game respectively, while Stuelke continues to be a force on the boards at 7.1 rebounds per game.
