Hawks in the NFL - Week 16

Not the sort of holiday weekend we hoped for.

NFL: Detroit Lions at Minnesota Vikings Matt Krohn-USA TODAY Sports

It’s Week 16 and the news kinda stinks. Let’s go, I guess...

Tight Ends

We start with TJ Hockenson. Hockenson finished Sunday’s 30-24 loss to Detroit with 4 receptions for 58 yards. Unfortunately, Hockenson suffered a knee injury in the game and the worst fears for Hockenson were realized Tuesday.

UGH. That of course ends Hock’s season, and could easily alter his 2024 season as well. GODDAMNIT.

On the other sideline, it was a quiet day for Sam LaPorta, as Detroit’s impact rookie ended with 3 catches for 18 yards as Detroit won the NFC North for the first time, and won a division title for the first time since 1993 when it was still known as the NFC Central (also involved in this game was Jack Campbell, and he finished with 3 tackles on the day).

George Kittle had an excellent Monday, finishing with 7 receptions for 126 yards. Unfortunately, it was less than excellent for the 49ers, as they were thumped by Baltimore 33-19 in a matchup of the top seeds in the NFC and AFC (Geno Stone also involved and had 3 tackles).

Of course, we have seen that version of Brock Purdy before.

And he threw 4 on Monday!

Lastly, Noah Fant had no stats as Seattle entered the playoff picture with a 20-17 come-from-behind win over Tennessee.

Ihmir Smith-Marsette

ISM found himself back on the scoresheet this week, finishing with 1 reception for 18 yards and 2 carries for 33 yards and a 20-yard touchdown, an excellent effort going through 3 players to find the end zone for the second time this year.

CJ Beathard

He’s back! CJB made a fourth quarter cameo in Jacksonville’s 30-12 blowout loss to Tampa, and he didn’t disappoint. Beathard finished 11-15 for 94 yards and a touchdown pass, a 1-yard pass in garbage time to Calvin Ridley.

Jacksonville’s season has come undone and might now depend on CJB righting the ship, as Trevor Lawrence suffered a sprained AC joint, making way for CJB to enter. Once sitting at 8-3 and in contention for the top seed in the AFC, they’re now 8-7. The only positive for Jacksonville is no one seems to want to win this division, as both Indianapolis and Houston lost to leave the division in a 3-way 8-7 pillow fight.

Potpourri/Broncos Corner

Desmond King had 11 tackles, 2 for loss, and a pass breakup in Houston’s demoralizing loss to Cleveland.

The Broncos lost to the horrid Patriots Sunday night, losing on a last-second field goal. Josey Jewell had 3 tackles (1 for loss), Ben Niemann saw action and recorded 2 tackles, and Riley Moss picked up a single tackle. The less said about that loss the better.

Tyler Goodson had 1 catch for 15 yards and 1 rush for 15 yards, but the Colts lost in embarrassing fashion to the Falcons.
