It’s been a brutal couple of weeks for Hawkeye fans. While virtually everyone expected Iowa to hit a rough patch in the days that followed the football team’s loss in the Big Ten Championship Game, the fashion in which the Hawkeyes faltered in their two subsequent games was startling.

Perhaps more startling, however, was the abysmal home loss little less than a week ago when Iowa feel by double figures to a .500 Michigan team playing with all sorts of controversy around its head coach. The Wolverines are a mediocre team that should have provided this group of Hawkeyes an opportunity to bounce back in front of a home crowd, get into the win column in the Big Ten and push toward the end of the calendar year with some momentum.

That was not the case and now the Hawkeyes find themselves at .500 on the season and in an 0-2 whole in conference play. They are now desperate for wins to close out the year before the return to Big Ten play with a road trip to the always difficult Kohl Center to face a top-25 Wisconsin team.

Fortunately, the schedule eases up as Iowa exits finals week. The Hawkeyes look to get back into the win column this afternoon with a “neutral site” matchup against the Florida A&M Rattlers from Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

The Rattlers should be just the team to get things going. Florida A&M comes into the day averaging less than 70 points per game and at just 2-5 on the season. However, both of those wins have come in their last two outings as their competition level has noticeably softened.

Florida A&M kicked off their season with a 105-54 drubbing at the hands of the same Creighton team that the Hawkeyes were able to hang with back in November. The Rattlers also hold losses to future Iowa opponent Nebraska, as well as P6 teams Florida and Oregon.

Led by senior guard Love Bettis with 15.3 points per game, the Rattlers boast three players averaging double figures on the season. Bettis is joined by senior forward Keith Lamar, who is putting up 14.3 points and a team-high 6.1 rebounds per game. Florida A&M enters the day ranked 305th in the NCAA’s NET rankings.
