Happy Monday!

Our countdown towards Iowa Hawkeyes football continues with a redshirt freshman offensive lineman.

Josh Volk - Freshman
Cedar Rapids, IA (Xavier)
6’4”, 314 lbs
2021 Projection: Backup offensive lineman

Volk was a 3-star offensive lineman out of high school in 2019 with offers from Iowa State and Nebraska in addition to Iowa, according to 247sports.

Volk plays primarily at right tackle in his HS tape and shows solid ability in both the run and pass games. As JP wrote in his commitment post, he’s got a mean streak and shows good ability in the open field. While he certainly looks capable as a tackle, his ability in the running game may set him up inside for years to come. As such, he was shown as backup to Justin Britt at right guard ahead of spring ball and played on the second unit in Iowa’s final open practice.

Considering the Hawk he is backing up, there’s a real possibility he finds himself on the field in 2021 due to injuries. If he’s able to maintain his role as a top 10 offensive lineman, he’ll likely see the field in some respect during the 2021 season. Should he play well, it would give Iowa a reliable multiyear contributor on the inside.
