Welcome to the official countdown to kickoff! Each day through September 4th we’re highlighting a member of the Iowa football team whose number corresponds with the number of days remaining until football returns to Kinnick Stadium. You can find each of the previous players highlighted in the Countdown to Kickoff stream here. You can also find the full Iowa roster here.

Desmond Hutson - Sophomore

Raytown, MO (Raytown HS)

6’3”, 210 lbs

2021 Projection: Backup wide receiver / special teams

Iowa’s next “big” receiver?

The Iowa Hawkeyes were pretty loaded at wide receiver in 2020 from an experience standpoint. Seniors Ihmir Smith-Marsette and Brandon Smith ate up a bunch of snaps. After that the Hawks had Nico Ragaini and Tyrone Tracy Jr. among others who had caught balls for the Hawks. Desmond Hutson looked to be in the mix to play, however, because he has something that others don’t have. Size. Hutson is a big dude. Alas, Desmond was injured in the preseason and did not see the field in 2020.

In 2019 Hutson appeared in a number of games. He did not accumulate meaningful statistics.

In high school Hutson was second-team all-district as a senior. He was first-team all-conference as both a junior and senior.

Here is the HUDL link for Desmond’s high school video highlights.

The Hawkeyes have some very talented, young wide receivers coming in as well as some proven players at the position. For a football team depth is a great thing. From a playing-time standpoint it is hard to crack a lineup. Hutson will have to prove himself in practice. That means more to a Kirk Ferentz-coached player than probably anywhere else in the country. Special teams is also an option. Get noticed there first. That has been a recipe for success at Iowa for over forty years. The big thing that Hutson has going for him is that he’s..... big. Go Hawks!
