The young Iowa Hawkeyes team played like a veteran squad in its first round game against the Central Michigan Chippewas. The Hawkeyes prevailed 87-72. The Hawks were very balanced from a scoring standpoint. Caitlin Clark was, well, Caitlin Clark, with 23 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists.
Monika Czinano just keeps coming at you; she ended with 23. Kate Martin had an excellent first half and ended with 13, and McKenna Warnock took over for a stretch in the second half. Warnock ended with 13 points and 10 boards.
Tomi Taiwo chipped in 7 points, 4 rebounds, and played excellent defense. Micaela Kelly, Central Michigan’s excellent guard, was in early foul trouble. The Hawks did a nice job of knowing where she was and forced her to give the ball up at times. A testament to her ability as she still scored 23 points on the day.
If Megan Rapinoe is watching, it’s kinda a big deal!
Tune TF in yall, Sis Clark for IOWA is a problem . Also this brewing rivalry between Clark and *Buckets* from UCONN is FUN!!!!! https://t.co/Xv01WP3XiG— Megan Rapinoe (@mPinoe) March 21, 2021
Despite the 15 point victory, the Hawks got their nose bloodied a couple of times. The Chippewas fought the entire game, once cutting the lead to 6 points. Iowa ended the third quarter on a 7-0 run and held off Central Michigan’s run in the 4th quarter. The Hawkeyes will play Tuesday against the winner of Kentucky / Idaho State. This will most-likely be Kentucky. The Wildcats have two-time SEC player of the year Rhyne Howard. It should be a good one! Go Hawks!
