It’s time to see if this project is going to get a passing grade.
Coy Kirkpatrick - Junior
Madrid, IA (Madrid)
6’4”, 291 lbs
2020 projection: Reserve Guard
Kirkpatrick came to Iowa as defensive lineman and redshirted back in 2017. A front-loaded defensive line kinda made the decision for Coy to switch sides of the ball, where he’s having just as difficult a time breaking out.
After seeing mop up duty in three games in 2018, Kirkpatrick rode the bench for the entirety of 2019, failing to even make it on special teams.
Things don’t necessarily get much easier for Kirkpatrick this year either, even with the departures of the Paulsen brothers. It’s all but confirmed that some combination of Kyler Schott, Justin Britt, and Cody Ince will take over duties at guard, with Mark Kallenberger potentially making a run on the interior line as well.
Save nothing for the other Coy on the roster, Coy Cronk, who didn’t transfer to Iowa to sit on the bench. Though Cronk might project as Tristan Wirfs’ replacement on the right side.
It’s going to be interesting to see who returns to campus in the best shape after a long spat of quarantining. You can’t rule anyone out yet, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a backup jump a complacent incumbent somewhere on the roster. Pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered, after all.
