75 Days Until Hawkeye Football: Josh Volk

The local true freshman is another likely redshirt candidate

NCAA Football: Iowa State at Iowa Reese Strickland-USA TODAY Sports

Happy Monday!

Our countdown towards Iowa Hawkeyes football continues with another true freshman offensive lineman.

Josh Volk - Freshman
Cedar Rapids, IA (Xavier)
6’4”, 305 lbs
2020 Projection: Reserve offensive lineman

Volk was a 3-star offensive lineman out of high school in 2019 with offers from Iowa State and Nebraska in addition to Iowa, according to 247sports.

Volk plays primarily at right tackle and shows solid ability in both the run and pass games. As JP wrote in his commitment post, he’s got a mean streak and shows good ability in the open field. While he certainly looks capable as a tackle, his ability in the running game may set him up inside for years to come.

Like Tyler Elsbury before him, it’d be silly to project real playing time this season even though he’s field-ready in terms of size. The goal as with many true freshmen is simply to see the field in the (up to) four games while maintaining a redshirt.

If he’s able to do that, it may give some indication as to where he’ll line up. Otherwise, he’ll have a couple years to incubate and challenge for starting spots.
