When was the last time you can remember Iowa having an embarrassment of riches at the receiver position?
Calvin Lockett- Sophomore
Largo, FL (Largo)
6’2”, 182 lbs
2020 Projection: Reserve wide receiver
Coached by former Hawkeye Marcus Paschal in high school, Lockett came to Iowa in 2018 after garnering all-state honors in Florida. He picked the Hawkeyes over Purdue, Boston College, and basically every school in Florida outside big three.
He took a redshirt early on and still sat on the bench last year. When Brandon Smith missed a few games midseason, we thought it might’ve been Lockett time. Instead, Tyrone Tracy’s production went up while Ihmir Smith-Marsette and Nico Ragaini still ate. Lockett (and Oliver Martin) remain(ed) on the bench.
He already proves himself as a valuable ambassador of the program, as he’s helped Iowa secure the commitment of a former teammate (and fellow wideout) Quavon Matthews.
I suspect Lockett will have a role on special teams this year (he has yet to touch the field in any capacity), but is going to have to wait one more season before he’s able to make any sort of mark on the program. This is a good thing.
