It’s been a weird year. The start of Hawkeye basketball is imminent amidst a delayed football season. We’ll continue our postponed countdown over the next 24 hours. Next up: Tony Perkins
Tony Perkins
Guard, 6’4”, 210 lbs
Indianapolis, Ind. (Lawrence North)
An all-state player and Mr. Basketball nominee in the basketball-crazed state Indiana, Perkins earned the designation of BoilerHawk’s favorite freshman, so let’s keep an eye on him.
Averaging 19 points and 60 percent from the field as a senior, Perkins led Lawrence North to a 25-2 record in 2019. He shot at a 35 percent clip from deep as a senior, giving him some space to improve to that 40 sweet spot under Fran.
There’s a path for Perkins to find playing time, even if the guard room finds itself a little more crowded with Jordan Bohannon returning this year. Perkins likely projects as a 2 or stretch 3, giving the staff some wiggle room when Bohannon or CJ Fredrick needs a breather.
This will be a good year for Perkins to gain limited but not minuscule court action while learning under Fran and Bohannon. I could see him being among the trio of first guys off the bench eventually, and still carve out a role for the eventual Big Ten Champions.
