Several starters look to punch their tickets to the 2021 World Team Trials

@Hawkeyesports.com

There are 19 current Iowa Hawkeyes ready to roll this weekend at the 2020 UWW and U23 Nationals set in Omaha, Nebraska.

Eleven of them are set to kick ass in the U23 tournament, with the addition of former Hawkeye grad, Jeremiah Moody. Likewise, there’s another nine gearing up for the UWW.

These are age-level freestyle events with the winners of each punching their tickets to the 2021 World Team Titles, so needless to say, there is quite a bit on the line here in mid-November. U23 is 23 and under, while the UWW is 20 and under.

For our Hawks is directly on the heels of a rather successful Hawkeye Wrestling Club Showdown which saw several of these guys facing off with each other in the undercard event. Now, they get to take their talents and aggression and throw it against outsiders. Normally, we don’t get to see this many Hawks competing in freestyle events, especially while enrolled at Iowa, so this without a doubt, a special treat.

Official practices began a couple weeks back and with the season schedule supposedly kicking off in January, Brands and Co. have decided to mix things up and get these guys some tough competition early and often.

As it stands right now there are six former starters competing in the U23: Austin DeSanto (61kg), Max Murin (65kg), Kaleb Young (70kg), Nelson Brands (79kg), Jacob Warner (92kg), and Tony Cassioppi (125kg).

Young, Warner, and Cassioppi are all favorites to reach the finals, with the latter two heavier favorites for outright wins, especially that of Big Cass.

Here’s a breakdown of every Hawkeye wrestler registered for this weekend.

U23: Austin DeSanto (61 kg), Carter Happel (65 kg), Max Murin (65 kg), Kaleb Young (70 kg), Jeremiah Moody (74 kg), Tristan McDonald (79 kg), Myles Wilson (79 kg), Nelson Brands (79 kg), Jacob Warner (92 kg), Tony Cassioppi (125 kg), Aaron Costello (125 kg)

U20: Cullan Schriever (57 kg), Jesse Ybarra (57 kg), Charles Matthews (57 kg), Cobe Siebrecht (65 kg), Colby Schriever (65kg), Bretli Reyna (70 kg), Patrick Kennedy (79 kg), Gabe Christenson (92 kg), Zach Glazier (92 kg)
