College Football Week 5 Viewing Guide

Can week five possibly be any crazier than week 4? We can only hope.

We’re now just three weeks away from the return of Big Ten and Iowa football. That means just three more weeks of waiting, but also just three more weeks of being an unbiased observer of the type of chaos we witnessed last weekend.

Week 4 was a wild one in college football with big time upsets of top-10 teams, ridiculous plays and of course more COVID-19. None of it impacted Iowa and Hawkeye fans could sit back and watch the absurdity play out without the anxiety attached to being a fan. That will change soon enough.

Until then, let’s embrace what we do have, which is a relatively full slate of games packed into two days this week with plenty more opportunities for craziness. Here’s which games to watch and where to find them.

Friday, September 25th Games

With no Thursday night games this week, we get two tonight. That includes a matchup featuring a pair of winless teams as well as a matchup featuring two unbeatens. Why not.

Things get kicked off at 6pm CT this evening as Campbell is at Wake Forest. You can find that one on the ACC Network. Then at 8pm CT, you’ve got Louisiana Tech at #22 BYU. That’s on ESPN2.

Saturday, September 26th Games

If Friday’s appetizer of games didn’t get you excited, there should be something for everyone on Saturday.

As usual, things kick off at 11am CT. ESPN has #3 Florida hosting South Carolina. Over on FOX you’ve got TCU at #9 Texas. ABC is showing Baylor at West Virginia. Then you’ve got Missouri at #21 Tennessee on the SEC Network and NC State at #24 Pitt on the ACC Network. So, options.

There’s a trio of games kicking off between 11:30 and 12:30 that you largely don’t care about and are largely only available online, but check the full slate below if you’re looking to fill some halftime dead space.

The afternoon slate kicks off at 2:30pm CT. ABC has #12 North Carolina at Boston College. ESPN is showing #17 Oklahoma State at Kansas while ESPN2 has #25 Memphis at SMU. FS1 has Texas Tech at Kansas State and South Florida at #15 Cincinnati is relegated to ESPN+.

Perhaps the second best game of the week is on CBS in that 2:30 slot. That’s #13 Texas A&M at #2 Alabama. The Tide are 17.5 point favorites. Yes, really.

[Quick poll: do we think Iowa would stay within 18 points of Bama? Do we think Iowa is a top-15 team in the country?]

At 3pm CT, you’ve got a handful of staggered starts. Half of which you won’t care about but there are a couple potentially good ones. ACC Network has Virginia Tech at Duke and the SEC Network has Ole Miss at Kentucky.

The evening slate has a nice transition as we get an early start from Navy and Air Force. That kicks off at 5pm and you can find it on CBS Sports Network.

In the new primetime slot at 6:30, our old friends in Ames get to host the #18 Oklahoma Sooners. That’s on ABC and I’m sure Oklahoma won’t be at all mad following the embarrassing loss last week. The SEC Network has #20 LSU at Vanderbilt with Arkansas at #16 Mississippi State relegated to an alternate (I guess when the new guy comes in and sets the world on fire by beating the defending national champs you stick him where nobody can see him instead of embracing it). ESPN2 has Tulsa at #11 UCF.

But the game of the week has to be #7 Auburn at #4 Georgia. It’s on ESPN, rather than ABC, for some reason, but either way it should be highly entertaining.

Things wrap up early this week with no true night cap (the Mountain West is fully back on 10/24 with the PAC-12 back on 11/6 so hold on just a little longer and we’ll get back to the late night fun). The last game of the day is at 7pm CT as #1 Clemson hosts Virginia. That’s on the ACC Network.

And that’s it for this week. Here’s a look at the full slate for week 5:
