Last week we had the preseason look at the team and discussed how they lost many of their top players and that it would be interesting to see if the new players would be able to fill those roles. Well, after one week, the answer is an emphatic “YES”.
Iowa started the season on the road as they traveled to Virginia to play in the James Madison Tournament. A 2-1 record would have been seen as a respectable result but the Hawkeyes exceeded expectations by going 3-0 in matches and 9-1 in sets and winning the tournament. This included a sweep over #22 ranked Washington State. The road victory (albeit a neutral court) over a ranked opponent was the team’s first since 2012 when they defeated Purdue.
Junior setter Brie Orr was named the tournament MVP and senior OH Meghan Buzzerio was named to the all-tourney team.
