Each week of the high school football season, we break down the performance of each of Iowa’s commits in the recruiting class of 2020. As a reminder, you can keep up to date on all things recruiting by visiting the Iowa Football Recruiting Hub.
Three weeks in and the Hawkeyes are undefeated. A big reason for the success thus far in 2019 has been contribution from a number of young guys. The class of 2020 is loaded with talented players who could be the next young contributor for the Hawkeyes. Here’s a look at how they performed in week 3.
Deuce Hogan, QB
Hometown: Grapevine, TX (Faith Christian)
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 205

Quarterback Deuce Hogan had yet another big game in week four. He finished 15 of 25 (60%) passing for 231 yards and 4 TD with no INTs as Faith Christian took down Lincoln 49-18 on Friday.
The win moves Faith Christian to 4-0 on the year. Through 4 games, Hogan is 73 of 99 passing (73.7%) for 1,008 yards with 14 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. Faith Christian will take on Canadian this week.
Gavin Williams, RB
Hometown: West Des Moines, IA (Dowling)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 195

Running back Gavin Williams was back from his stress fracture for his first game of the season Friday night with RB coach Derrick Foster and HC Kirk Ferentz on hand. Williams had 20 carries for 150 yards (7.5 ypc) in his season debut as Dowling took down Ankeny Centennial 31-10.
Dowling moves to 3-1 on the year. They’ll be at Ankeny this week.
Leshon Williams, RB
Hometown: Oak Lawn, IL (Richards)
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 205

Fellow running back commit Leshon Williams missed Friday’s game with an ankle injury he suffered in the second half a week ago. Richards still picked up a 54-0 win over Argo to move to 3-1 on the year.
On the season, Williams has 432 yards and 4 TDs on 67 carries (6.5 ypc). He’ll likely be sidelined for a couple weeks. Richards will host Evergreen Park this week.
Quavon Matthews, WR
Hometown: Largo, FL (Largo)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 170
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Wide receiver commit Quavon Matthews and Largo struggled a bit this week. Matthews finished with only one catch for 25 yards as Largo fell to #3 Palmetto 44-6.
The loss drops Largo to 3-2 on the year. Matthews has 260 yards and 1 TD on 10 catches for a 26 ypc average through 5 games. Largo will take on Clearwater Countryside this week.
Diante Vines, WR
Hometown: Watertown, CT (The Taft School)
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 190
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Fellow wide receiver commit Diante Vines hauled in 5 catches for 50 yards (10 ypc) as Taft took down Salisbury 22-8
Through 2 games, Vines now has 11 catches for 110 yards (10 ypc) and 1 touchdown. Taft moves to 2-0 with the win. They’ll take on Williston Northampton this week.
Elijah Yelverton, TE
Hometown: Cedar Hill, TX (Trinity Christian)
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 235

Tight end Elijah Yelverton had a rather quiet game on Friday. He finished with just 2 catches for 17 yards (8.5 ypc) as Trinity Christian rolled Melissa 48-7.
The win moves Trinity Christian to 3-1 on the year. Through 4 games, Yelverton now has 126 yards and a TD on 15 catches (8.4 ypc). Trinity Christian will be at Houston St. Thomas this week.
Luke Lachey, TE
Hometown: Grandview Heights, OH (Grandview Heights)
Height: 6’7”
Weight: 220
Stars: 247 Sports - 4 Rivals - 3
Fellow tight end commit Luke Lachey had 61 yard and a TD on 6 catches (10.2 ypc). Grandview Heights defeated Bexley 31-10 to move to 4-0 on the year.
Lachey now has 24 catches for 299 yards (12.5 ypc) and 4 touchdowns. Grandview Heights is at Whitehall-Yearling this week.
Brenden Deasfernandes, DB
Hometown: Belleville, MI (Belleville)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 161
Stars: 247 Sports - 2 Rivals - 2
Cornerback commit Brenden Deasfernandes two more tackles last week as Belleville crushed Glenn 44-0. The win moves Belleville to 4-0 on the year. Deasfernandes now has 6 tackles and the 1 pass breakup on the season. Belleville will take on Wayne Memorial this week.
Reginald Bracy, DB
Hometown: Mobile, AL (St. Paul’s)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 190
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
No stats available for safety Reginald Bracy but St. Paul’s took down Gulf Shore’s 51-13 on Friday. The win moves St. Paul’s to 4-1 on the season. Bracy had 37 tackles, 4 TFL, 3 sacks, and 3 PBUs going into the game.
St. Paul’s will take on Spanish Fort this week.
Keylen Gulley, DB
Hometown: Largo, FL (Largo)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 167
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
As with Bracy, no stats available for defensive back Keylen Gulley. As mentioned above, Largo fell to #3 Palmetto 44-6 to fall to 3-2 on the year.
Gulley had 16 tackles and 5 PBUs coming into the week. Largo will take on Clearwater Countryside this week.
AJ Lawson, DB
Hometown: Decatur, IL (MacArthur)
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 180
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Again, no stats available for defensive back AJ Lawson in a tough one as MacArthur fell to Rochester 43-0 this week. The loss drops MacArthur to 2-2 on the season. They’ll host Springfield Southeast this week.
Jay Higgins, LB
Hometown: Indianapolis, IN (Brebeuf Jesuit Prep)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 209

Linebacker commit Jay Higgins had yet another amazing game this week. He finished with 10 tackles, including 1 TFL and a pass broken up on the defensive side of the ball. He also added 76 yards on 7 catches on offense as Brebeuf Jesuit took down Culver Academies and defensive end commit Deontae Craig 21-14.
The win moves Brebeuf Jesuit to 4-1 on the year. Through 5 games, Higgins now has 67 tackles, 4.5 TFL, and 4 PBUs. Brebeuf Jesuit will take on Roncalli this week.
Ethan Hurkett, LB
Hometown: Cedar Rapids, IA (Xavier)
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 230
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Ethan Hurkett had another solid game for Cedar Rapids Xavier this week, finishing with 8 tackles and 1.5 TFL. Xavier moved to 4-0 as they defeated West Delaware 28-12.
Hurkett now has 30 tackles and a fumble recovery through four games this year. Xavier will host Maquoketa this week.
Yahya Black, DE
Hometown: Marshall, MN (Marshall)
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 250

Defensive end commit Yahya Black had another solid game on Friday with offensive line coach Tim Polasek on hand (it has been rumored Black may end up on the OL). He tallied 4 tackles, including a TFL, as Marshall defeated St. Peter 41-12 on Friday.
The win moves Marshall to 4-0 on the year. Black now has 26 tackles, 5 TFL and 3 sacks on the year. Marshall will host New Ulm this week.
Lukas Van Ness, DE
Hometown: Barrington, IL (Barrington)
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 240

Defensive end Lukas Van Ness also had another solid game. He finished with 5 tackles, including 2 TFL, and a QB hurries on Friday as Barrington took down Glenbrook South 41-15. The win moves Barrington to 3-1 on the year.
Through 4 games, Van Ness now has 14 tackles, 8 TFL and a sack. Barrington will take on Palatine this week.
Deontae Craig, DE
Hometown: Culver, IN (Culver Academies)
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 235

Fellow defensive end Deontae Craig had another monster game last week in the tough loss to Jay Higgins and Brebeuf Jesuit with DL coach Kelvin Bell on hand. Craig finished with 5 tackles, including 3 TFL, 2 sacks and a blocked field goal on the night. As mentioned, Culver Academies fell to Brebeuf Jesuit 21-14 to fall to 2-3 on the year.
Through 5 games, Craig now has 31 tackles, 12 TFL and 3 sacks for Culver Academies. They’ll take on Elkhart Memorial this week.
Logan Jones, DE
Hometown: Council Bluffs, IA (Lewis Central)
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 252
Stars: 247 Sports - 4 Rivals - 3
Defensive lineman Logan Jones once again didn’t have to put in much work on Friday. Lewis Central beat Thomas Jefferson 60-14 to move to 4-0 on the year. Jones has 6 tackles, 2.5 TFL and a sack on the season.
Lewis Central will host Creston this week.
Isaiah Bruce, DE
Hometown: Lena, IL (Lena-Winslow)
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 265
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
As we’ve seen all year, no stats for defensive line commit Isaiah Bruce, but Lena-Winslow came away with another big win on Friday. They took down Dakota 46-14 to move to 4-0 on the year. They’ll be at Stockton this week.
Tyler Elsbury, OL
Hometown: Byron, IL (Byron)
Height: 6’6”
Weight: 298
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Offensive lineman Tyler Elsbury and Byron beat up on Oregon 45-7 this week. The win moves them to 3-1 on the year. They’ll host North Boone this week.
Josh Volk, OL
Hometown: Cedar Rapids, IA (Xavier)
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 305
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Cedar Rapids Xavier OL Josh Volk is still recovering from ACL surgery late last season. He sat out again in week four against West Delaware as Xavier won 28-12 to move to 4-0 on the year. They’ll host Maquoketa this week.
