51 Days Until Hawkeye Basketball: Aidan Vanderloo

The freshman walk-on figures to sit out his first year on the roster

We continue the annual countdown to the Iowa Hawkeyes basketball season with a freshman walk-on: Aidan Vanderloo!

Guard, 6’2”, 190 lbs
Freshman, Sioux City, IA (Sioux City East)

The walk-on freshman was someone I totally forgot about when building this list, so apologies to Aidan Vanderloo and his family.

He had a storied career at East, where he left the school as the all-time leading scorer and three-point shooter after averaging 22.4 points on 52% shooting from three his senior year. Perhaps it’s most notable because that is where former Hawkeye Adam Woodbury attended high school, and Woody left as the #2 leading scorer at the school.

While it’s unlikely he finds him on the court this season, the path is there if you squint. Jordan Bohannon is likely out for the season and there are potential backcourt stalwarts in Joe Toussaint, Bakari Evelyn, & Connor McCaffery, what if none of them provide the offensive production the Hawks will miss without Bohannon’s jump shot?

Fran McCaffery has shown throughout his time that he isn’t afraid to play walk-ons and Vanderloo may be the next guy in line. If he takes after the guy who previously held the number, he’ll leave an impact on the Hawks even if it isn’t next year.
