Iowa jumped out to a 3-0 start this season as they won the James Madison Tournament and were heading home to play in the Big 10 vs. Pac 10 tournament hoping to keep that momentum. Unfortunately the home cooking didn’t sit right with the Hawkeyes as they lost both matches to the west coast teams to fall to 3-2 on the season.
Against Colorado, Iowa lost in straight sets 22-25, 20-25, 23-25. Then against a ranked Washington team, Iowa lost in a close, four set match 31-33, 23-25, 25-20, 23-25. The good news is Iowa is showing that they are competitive even against the ranked teams which should be useful once the Big Ten season starts on September 27.
There are currently seven Big Ten teams ranked in the AVCA Top 25.
Senior OH Meghan Buzzerio leads the team with 76 kills on 177 total attempts (.345 hitting percentage).
The Buzzerio sisters (Meghan and Sophomore sister Courtney) have combined for 46% (108-233) of Iowa’s kills and 62% (13-21) of Iowa’s service aces.
Junior DS Halle Johnston is leading the team with 79 digs.
Sophomore MB Amiya Jones has 18 blocks to lead the squad.
Fri/Sat September 13/14: South Dakota Tourney - Iowa will travel to South Dakota and play Wyoming and UC Davis on Friday and host South Dakota on Saturday. The Hawkeyes will look for another tournament victory.
