SpoCo Radio Episode 6: Headlining the Big Ten Conference (and Iowa State)

We preview the Big Ten Conference (and Iowa State) by using actual headlines on the internet

This past weekend, I was Googling some things about the Michigan Wolverines when I came upon a headline from the Detroit Free Press with a partial quote from new Wolverines offensive coordinator, Josh Gattis, that utterly shocked me:

Michigan’s tight ends think they can be as good as T.J. Hockenson, Noah Fant

Wait, what?

As good as T.J. Hockenson, the first round draft pick? As good as Noah Fant, the first round draft pick? Are you insane?

That doesn’t just happen. Not at Michigan. Not at Ohio State. Not at USC. Not at Texas. Not at Alabama. None of them have ever had two tight ends of that caliber before AND had them selected within the first 20 picks of the NFL draft. These types of guys (of which are developed exclusively at #TightEndU) don’t just grow on trees.

That’s just irresponsible expectations to set.

I was dumbfounded. I mean, I love coach speak just as much as the other guy, but if Brian Ferentz said that he thinks that Nate Wieting and Shaun Beyer can be as good as T.J. Hockenson, Noah Fant I would ask for someone to send him to the hospital.

But for a dude that has spent his off season dealing with Jim Harbaugh and fighting with his old co-offensive coordinator from Alabama to say that is just a wild, wild thing.

So, I did what most people do these days, and sent a screen shot to my buddies and asked them to peep this bologna.

After raging against the machine for a few minutes, one of our other buddies sent an equally deranged headline about Ohio State... and suddenly, our group chat was filled with outlandish headlines from programs all over the Big Ten Conference (and Iowa State).

When it came time for us to preview the Big Ten this week, we took that very concept and put it into podcast form.

So DCIII, the People’s Champ and myself split the 14-conference teams and Iowa State equally and went on our way to find one crazy/interesting/weird headline for each team for us to discuss before making up our own future headline that predicts how the season will go for that team.

It’s a fun one.

Plus, we also discuss Kid’s Day and have our first voicemail that calls us out on what we missed from our “Favorite Iowa Things” show last week.

Make sure you all subscribe, download, listen and share the show. Leave us a review in iTunes (best reviews will get read at some point in the foreseeable future). And make sure you hit us up on Twitter (@davecreagh, @ChiPeoplesChamp, @JerryScherwin) or on our voicemail line at 224-661-0909.

All the X’s and O’s.
