While not a Hawkeye #16, a reminder of Iowa’s 55-24 victory over Ohio State is always appropriate.

Underclassmen will be wearing #16 this season. One is a Division 1 transfer coming back closer to home and the other is a highly touted recruit from a familiar high school out east.

Charlie Jones — RS Sophomore

Deerfield, IL (Deerfield)

5’11”, 184 lbs

2019 Projection: Reserve Wide Receiver

Terry Roberts — RS Freshman

Erie, PA (Cathedral Prep)

5’10”, 176 lbs

2019 Projection: Reserve DB

Jones came to Iowa as a walk-on transfer from the University of Buffalo. While there he helped lead the team to the MAC Championship Game in 2018 with 18 catches for 395 yards and three touchdowns over the course of the season. Jones also was a kick returner for the team.

In a normal year, a WR transfer like Jones would be interesting news. However, with the addition of Oliver Martin, Jones has slipped under the radar. I don’t expect Jones to be a major contributor in 2019 but the chance to get in the weight room and his ability to provide depth at the receiver and kick returner positions are a plus.

Roberts, a three-star recruit, hails from Erie, Pennsylvania so that immediately raises your eyebrow. Of course Erie was also home to former Hawkeyes Bob Sanders, Jovon Johnson, and Ed Hinkel.

In high school, Roberts helped Cathedral Prep to back-to-back state titles, including a 14-0 finish his senior season. Roberts played on both sides of the ball catching 42 balls for over 1,200 yards to go with 23 tackles and five interceptions.

If he’s patient, his time will come at Iowa and with the success of the program sending players from the defensive backfield to the NFL, Roberts should continue to work hard and wait for his chance to succeed.
