As we get ready to pull July off the wall and for football to begin, let’s check in on a newcomer to the Iowa roster for 2019.
#31 Jack Campbell — Freshman
Cedar Falls, IA (Cedar Falls)
6’4”, 218 lbs
2019 Projection: Reserve LB
Campbell was a 3-star recruit with offers from Iowa State, Minnesota, and Northern Iowa. He was named as one of the Iowa Elite 8 in the state as a senior and also made the All-Elite Team his junior year as well.
When you look at the 2017 Elite Team defense, besides Campbell, you’ll find his current Hawkeye teammates; Tyler Linderbaum, John Waggoner, Dillon Doyle, Mitch Riggs, Riley Moss, and Quinn Schulte as well so being named to that team as a junior was an honor.
During his senior season, Campbell registered 168 tackles, including 14 in the state final game that they lost to Dowling Catholic.
With the Hawkeyes using the linebacker spot less and less and plenty of upperclassmen currently on the roster, Campbell will almost assuredly redshirt in 2019. While he bulks up over the next couple seasons, there is always a chance of a position switch down the road to defensive line or even tight end.
However, if Campbell has the speed to produce in the middle of the field, I think he can become a tackling machine like recent Iowa linebackers Josey Jewell and James Morris.
