So some former Iowa Hawkeyes have teamed up with Iowa State Cyclones, UNI Panthers, and Drake Bulldogs in The Basketball Tournament. They’re playing tonight against AfterShocks (Wichita State alums) in Wichita at 8:00 PM CDT.
Former Hawkeyes include: Nicholas Baer, Melsahn Basabe, Matt Gatens, Peter Jok, and Cyrus Tate. Jeff Horner is the head coach.
So what is The Basketball Tournament?
It’s the winner-take-all $2 million tournament comprised of 64 teams. They’re playing in 8 regionals across last weekend and this and will have an elite 8 next week in Chicago.
Is there anything different about it?
- They use FIBA rules for goaltending (can knock a ball off the rim).
- Four 9-minute periods.
- They use the Elam Ending, which stops the clock after the first whistle inside of four minutes. From there the team who reaches the leading team’s score + 8 wins the game.
