This is shaping up to be a massive weekend for Iowa football recruiting. We’ve been telling you week about this weekend’s big official visit weekend with more than 20 visitors on campus, including some of Iowa’s top targets in 2020.

Before things could even get kicked off, the Hawkeyes got some incredible news with the commitment of 4-star 2021 offensive lineman Connor Colby last night. Now, less than 24 hours later, they have their first 2020 commitment of the weekend.

Lawson is a long, talented defensive back from Decatur, Illinois. He appears to be another Phil Parker special.

He’s been under the radar with an offer list that includes most of the MAC and Minnesota, but he’s got great length at 6’2” and he played both sides of the ball at MacArthur, lining up at receiver on offense.

At Iowa, Lawson likely projects as a safety. In addition to the length, he brings good instincts and a knack for cleaning up on tackles. That’s exactly what he’ll be asked to do in the back of the secondary in Iowa City.

Lawson is the first 2020 commit of the weekend, but he’s the 15th overall. He’s the second defensive back to join the group after Florida native Keylen Gulley committed a week ago. Look for Iowa to take another DB in the class, likely yet this weekend. They may add a fourth later in the cycle depending on the circumstances.

Welcome aboard AJ Lawson!
