72 Days Until Iowa Football: Coy Kirkpatrick

Another defensive line recruit flips sides

NCAA Football: Outback Bowl-Mississippi State vs Iowa Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Once again, the Iowa football factory is weaving oatmeal into oak, and making offensive linemen out of defensive linemen.

Class: RS Sophomore
From: Madrid, Iowa (Madrid)
Size: 6-foot-4 291 lbs
2019 Projection: Reserve interior offensive lineman

Coy Kirkpatrick was set to be a great defensive line project, with his commitment coming shortly after the Juan Harris episode, Kirkpatrick signed with the Hawks as soon as Kirk and Reese Morgan extended an offer his way. At the time, it was his only offer. Iowa State eventually dangled the carrot at Kirkpatrick, but it was too late. Rivals says Notre Dame and Florida State showed interest in Kirkpatrick, which is neat.

Kirkpatrick was told he was going to be a defensive end. Then he redshirted, and a logjam at the position unfolded before his eyes. Luckily he’d been putting work in the weight room, put on 30 lbs and saw action in three games as a redshirt freshman in 2018.

Kirkpatrick didn’t touch the field again after the Maryland win, and was officially ruled out of the Outback Bowl with an injury. He was held out of spring camp, and I’m actually not sure if he’s resumed practicing by now.

Kirkpatrick likely has to wait another year before he sees serious playing time. However, with next man up, you never no.

I don’t think he can long snap.
