The defensive end was one of over a dozen preferred walk-ons in 2018!
Ben Subbert – RS Freshman
Williamsburg, IA (Williamsburg)
6’4”, 248 lbs
2019 Projection: Reserve defensive end
Ben Subbert was a two-way player at nearby WIlliamsburg High as a tight end and defensive end who amassed 19 catches and 18 sacks his senior year.
According to an interview with Hawkeye Report, he had a number of scholarship offers - including Northern Illinois, North Dakota State, and UNI - before ultimately choosing to walk-on for Kirk Ferentz and company.
After spending the 2018 season redshirting as a tight end, he flipped over to defense, where the path to playing time offers the chance to crack the eight man rotation Phil Parker has begun employing as defensive coordinator. In his highlight reel, he showed solid hands as a tight end and had a nose for the ball on defense:
He joins his brother, Jackson, on the Hawkeyes.
