Iowa’s Anthony Nelson is going to Tampa!

The junior defensive end was selected in the 4th Round of the NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The pick comes at 107 overall. He’s the third Iowa lineman drafted in the last five years, following Carl Davis (2015) and Jaleel Johnson (2017).

Nelson is coming off two really solid seasons as an underclassman—good enough seasons that he declared for the draft this year when he perhaps could’ve gone earlier in the 2020 draft.

Nelson followed up 7.5 sacks as a sophomore with 9.5 this past season, offering a powerful rusher on the edge to complement a defense that logged 35 sacks all season—the most ever for a team in the Ferentz era.

At 6-7, 271 lbs, Nelson comes into the league with an NFL-ready frame. There was talk of him playing on the interior as well by draftniks, and since Nelson is already a disciple in the gospel of Doyle, adding another 20 or so lbs shouldn’t be a problem.

Best of luck to Anthony Nelson on his NFL future. We look forward to watching you terrorize opposing quarterbacks in some new colors!
