College Football Championship Week Watch Guide and Games Thread

It’s Championship Week and today’s games have big implications for Iowa’s bowl destination. Here’s what to watch and how!

It’s Championship Week around college football and really, that comes down to today. Utah and Oregon paired up in the Pac 12 Championship last night, but outside that, all other conference championships are today. In total, there are nine championship games today. As a college football fan with no dog in the fight, it’s a great day to sit back, relax and enjoy some (hopefully) good football. However, as we’ve stated all week, there are implications for the Hawkeyes abound.

Things kick off at 11am with the Big 12 Championship Game. That features #9 Baylor and #7 Oklahoma on ABC. At the same time, ESPN has the Sun Belt Championship featuring Louisiana and #21 Appalachian State. And ESPN2 has the MAC Championship featuring Miami (OH) and Central Michigan.

At 12:30, CBS Sports has the Conference USA Championship featuring UAB and FAU.

Then at 2:30, ABC has the AAC Championship game (are you getting confused by all the acronyms yet?) featuring #20 Cincinnati and #17 Memphis.

At 3pm, the SEC Championship features #2 LSU and #4 Georgia. You can find that on CBS. This one could have bowl implications for Iowa with a loss for Georgia knocking them out of the playoff picture and potentially setting up Alabama to end up in the Citrus. You’ll recall that was a potential landing spot for Iowa and that matchup would be.... not ideal.

Also at 3, ESPN has the Mountain West Championship featuring Hawaii and #19 Boise State

Then at 6:30, ABC brings you the ACC Championship featuring #3 Clemson and #23 Virginia. Things wrap up at 7pm with the Big Ten Championship game. That, of course, will feature # 1 Ohio State and #8 Wisconsin. A win from Wisconsin likely gets them a date with a New Year’s Six bowl while OSU almost certainly stays in the playoff. This would be a net positive for Iowa in the bowl pecking order with Penn State also likely playing on New Year’s Day. It would be difficult for Iowa to fall beyond the Holiday Bowl in such a scenario.

Here’s today’s full slate of games.
