Matthews committed to Iowa after missing much of his junior season due to an ACL tear. He didn’t let that slow him down, as he tallied 414 yards on only 17 receptions in 2019. That’s 24 yards per catch!
Though he did catch just 17 passes, Matthews was involved in the offense in a number of ways. He can be seen in his highlights on a reverse (he showed very nice vision on the play) as well as ... blocking. So he ticks the box there. He demonstrates the athleticism you’d like to see after a serious knee injury and looks comfortable running many routes, including across the middle.
The development behind Matthews’s recruitment is the involvement of former Hawkeye, Marcus Paschal, as an ambassador for Kirk Ferentz. In addition to Matthews, the pipeline to Largo has included Keylen Gulley of this class and freshman wide receiver Calvin Lockett.
While it’s unlikely Matthews sees the field his freshman year, the path to playing time will open up after Ihmir Smith-Marsette and Brandon Smith depart.
Congratulations again to Quavon!
