Deasfernandes committed to Iowa under borderline hilarious circumstances as someone with no other Division 1 offer to his name. The only one of note to me at the time was Davenport (and not the one in Iowa). So yeah, he was the classic diamond in the rough Phil Parker is wont to find.
Like much of this class, however, Deasfernandes leaves the fall as a more highly rated recruit than he began it (3* vs. NR) and it’s easy to see what Parker and company like out of him. He has that classic DB frame on which he can pack weight and his tape looks like it could come out of a Hawkeye game. While he tallied just one interception on the year, he keeps everything in front of him and shows a quick burst as a willing tackler when balls are thrown to his side. He finished with 22 tackles and 8 pass breakups.
According to Blair Sanderson, Deasfernandes will be an early entry at Iowa so he can pack on the pounds as quickly as possible. With only Michael Ojemudia slated to leave, there figures to be a lot of competition for that available corner spot. It’s unlikely he finds himself opposite Matt Hankins to open 2020 but weirder things have happened! If nothing else, special teamer supreme Devonte Young’s departure opens up one angle for a DB looking to get onto the field.
Congratulations again to Brenden!
