Each week of the high school football season, we break down the performance of each of Iowa’s commits in the recruiting class of 2020. As a reminder, you can keep up to date on all things recruiting by visiting the Iowa Football Recruiting Hub.
While the Hawkeyes were on a bye this week, the vast majority of commits in the class of 2020 were in action. A good portion were starting playoff runs while others were making their final push for a playoff seed during the regular season.
Here’s our weekly look at how each performed last week.
Deuce Hogan, QB
Hometown: Grapevine, TX (Faith Christian)
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 205
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 4
Quarterback Deuce Hogan had an up and down game this week finishing with 133 yards and 3 TDs on 8 of 20 passing (40%) but also threw 2 INTs as Faith Christian beat Fort Worth Southwest Christian 42-14. Through 8 games this season, Hogan is 114 of 188 passing (60.6%) for 1,704 yards with 22 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. Faith Christian will take on Fort Worth Christian this week.
Gavin Williams, RB
Hometown: West Des Moines, IA (Dowling)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 195

Running back Gavin Williams came up big for Dowling in their 35-7 playoff win over Des Moines Roosevelt this week. Williams finished with 102 yards and 2 TDs on 14 carries (7.3 ypc).
The win moves Dowling to 8-1 on the year. In seven games of action this season, Williams now has 787 yards and 10 TDs on 87 carries for a 9.0 yard per carry average. Dowling will take on Ankeny in the second round of the playoffs this week.
Leshon Williams, RB
Hometown: Oak Lawn, IL (Richards)
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 205
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Fellow running back commit Leshon Williams made his return from an ankle injury this week as Richards entered the playoffs. Williams had a monster game in his return, finishing with 195 yards on 20 carries and 30 receiving yards on 1 reception with all three of Richards’ touchdowns as they won 20-16 over Washington. That moves them to 9-1 on the year.
In just four games this season, Williams now has 627 yards and 9 TDs on 87 carries (7.2 ypc). Richards will take on Peoria in the second round of the playoffs this week.
Quavon Matthews, WR
Hometown: Largo, FL (Largo)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 170
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Wide receiver commit Quavon Matthews had just one catch for 15 yards but Largo came away with a 17-16 win over Wiregrass Ranch this week. The win moves Largo to 7-3 on the season.
Matthews now has 374 yards and 2 TDs on 15 catches for a 24.9 ypc average. Largo will play Countryside in the first round of the playoffs this week.
Diante Vines, WR
Hometown: Watertown, CT (The Taft School)
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 190
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Fellow wide receiver commit Diante Vines and the Taft School were on bye this week. On the season, Vines has 40 catches for 500 yards (12.5 ypc) and 7 receiving touchdowns on the season. Taft will take on Hotchkiss this week.
Elijah Yelverton, TE
Hometown: Cedar Hill, TX (Trinity Christian)
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 235

Tight end Elijah Yelverton had another solid game as he hauled in 5 catches for 52 yards but as Trinity Christian defeated Tyler Grace Community 56-7 this week. The win moves Trinity Christian to 8-1 on the year. On the season, Yelverton now has 415 yards and 4 TDs on 43 catches (9.7 ypc). Trinity Christian will play Bullard Brook Hill this week.
Luke Lachey, TE
Hometown: Grandview Heights, OH (Grandview Heights)
Height: 6’7”
Weight: 220
Stars: 247 Sports - 4 Rivals - 3
Fellow tight end commit Luke Lachey had a big game this week with both the Ferentzi on hand. He finished with 65 yards and a TD on 7 catches (9.3 ypc). Unfortunately, Grandview Heights fell 27-14 to Bishop Ready. The loss moves Grandview to 6-4 on the year.
Through 10 games, Lachey now has 44 catches for 494 yards (11.2 ypc) and 6 touchdowns. Grandview Heights will take on Paint Valley this week.
Brenden Deasfernandes, DB
Hometown: Belleville, MI (Belleville)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 161
Stars: 247 Sports - 2 Rivals - 2
Cornerback commit Brenden Deasfernandes had 2 tackle, a pass broken up and an interception last week as Belleville defeated Saline 49-10 in the first round of the playoffs last week. The win moves Belleville to 10-0 on the year.
Deasfernandes now has 18 tackles, 6 passes broken up and an interception on the season. Belleville will take on Woodhaven in the second round of the playoffs this week.
Reginald Bracy, DB
Hometown: Mobile, AL (St. Paul’s)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 190
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Safety Reginald Bracy had 4 tackles as St. Paul’s took down Robertsdale 41-19. The win moves St. Paul’s to 8-2 on the season. Bracy now has 75 tackles, 5 TFL, 3 sacks, 6 PBUs and an interception on the year. St. Paul’s will take on Lanier this week.
Keylen Gulley, DB
Hometown: Largo, FL (Largo)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 167
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Defensive back Keylen Gulley had one tackle and a pass broken up in Largo’s 17-16 win over Wiregrass Ranch. On the year, Gulley now has 41 tackles and 7 PBUs. Largo (7-3) will take on Countryside in the first round of the playoffs this week.
AJ Lawson, DB
Hometown: Decatur, IL (MacArthur)
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 180
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
No official stats, but defensive back AJ Lawson had a rushing touchdown this week. Unfortunately, it came in a losing effort as MacArthur fell 31-30 to Mt. Zion in the first round of the playoffs. Coming into the week, Lawson had 604 receiving yards and 7 TDs on 37 catches (16.3 ypc). MacArthur finishes the year 5-5.
Jay Higgins, LB
Hometown: Indianapolis, IN (Brebeuf Jesuit Prep)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 209
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Linebacker commit Jay Higgins and Brebeuf Jesuit fell in the first round of the Indiana State Playoffs. Higgins finished the year with 151 tackles, 8.5 TFL, 5 PBUs and a sack on defense, as well as 329 yards and 4 touchdowns on 26 catches on the offensive side of the ball. Brebeuf Jesuit finished 7-3.
Ethan Hurkett, LB
Hometown: Cedar Rapids, IA (Xavier)
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 230
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Ethan Hurkett finished with 9 tackles and 3.5 TFL in Xavier’s first round playoff game last week. Unfortunately, it came in a loss as Xavier fell 9-3 to North Scott.
Hurkett finishes his senior season with 70 tackles, 14.5 TFL, a sack, an interception and a fumble recovery. Xavier finishes 8-2 on the year.
Yahya Black, DE
Hometown: Marshall, MN (Marshall)
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 250
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Defensive end commit Yahya Black 4 tackles but saw his Marshall team fall 28-14 to Hutchinson in the second round of the playoffs. Black finishes his year with 60 tackles, 11.5 TFL and 5 sacks. Marshall finishes 9-2.
Lukas Van Ness, DE
Hometown: Barrington, IL (Barrington)
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 240
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Defensive end Lukas Van Ness finished with 5 tackles and 3 TFL but it came in a loss as Barrington fell 23-21 to Notre Dame in the first round of the playoffs. Van Ness finishes his season with 49 tackles, 25 TFL and 6 sacks. Barrington ends the year 6-4.
Deontae Craig, DE
Hometown: Culver, IN (Culver Academies)
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 235
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
No official stats as of yet, but defensive end Deontae Craig and Culver Academies saw their season end with a 49-3 loss to New Prairie in the second round of the playoffs. Craig has 57 tackles, 20.5 TFL, 7.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and an interception coming into the week. Culver Academies finishes the year 6-5.
Logan Jones, DE
Hometown: Council Bluffs, IA (Lewis Central)
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 252
Stars: 247 Sports - 4 Rivals - 3
Defensive lineman Logan Jones had 2 tackles and a TFL as Lewis Central defeated Oskaloosa 44-0 in the first round of the playoffs. That moves them to 9-1 on the year.
Jones now has 20 tackles, 10 TFL and 4 sacks on the season. Lewis Central will take on Dallas Center-Grimes in the second round of the playoffs this week.
Isaiah Bruce, DE
Hometown: Lena, IL (Lena-Winslow)
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 265
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Defensive lineman Isaiah Bruce had 3 tackles and a sack on defense to go with 78 rushing yards and 2 TDs on 6 carries as Lena-Winslow took down Aurora Christian 46-8 in the first round of the playoffs.
On the season, Bruce has 49 tackles and 12 TFL on defense and 688 yards and 11 touchdowns on 56 carries (12.3 ypc) on offense. Lena-Winslow is now 10-0 and will take on Orangeville in the second round of the playoffs this week.
Tyler Elsbury, OL
Hometown: Byron, IL (Byron)
Height: 6’6”
Weight: 298
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Offensive lineman Tyler Elsbury and Byron came away with a 50-28 win over Alleman in the first round of the playoffs this week. The win moves them to 9-1 on the year. They’ll play Durand-Pecatonica in the second round of the playoffs this week.
Josh Volk, OL
Hometown: Cedar Rapids, IA (Xavier)
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 305
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
As mentioned Cedar Rapids Xavier and OL Josh Volk fell 9-3 to North Scott in the first round of the playoffs this week. They end the year 8-2.
