Each week of the high school football season, we break down the performance of each of Iowa’s commits in the recruiting class of 2020. As a reminder, you can keep up to date on all things recruiting by visiting the Iowa Football Recruiting Hub.
Last week was disappointing for the Hawkeyes. In the class of 2020, it was a bit more upbeat, though a number of commits were on a bye.
Here’s our weekly look at how they performed.
Deuce Hogan, QB
Hometown: Grapevine, TX (Faith Christian)
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 205
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 4
Quarterback Deuce Hogan had the week off to recover from their first loss of the year a week ago. Through 5 games, Hogan is 82 of 126 passing (65.1%) for 1,222 yards with 16 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. Faith Christian will take on Frisco Legacy Christian this week.
Gavin Williams, RB
Hometown: West Des Moines, IA (Dowling)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 195
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Running back Gavin Williams finished with 56 yards and a touchdown on only 5 carries (11.2 ypc) as Dowling defeated Des Moines Lincoln 61-7 on Friday. The win moves Dowling to 5-1 on the year. In three games of action, Williams now has 257 yards and 2 TDs on 40 carries for a 6.4 yard per carry average. Dowling will take on Sioux City East this week.
Leshon Williams, RB
Hometown: Oak Lawn, IL (Richards)
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 205

Fellow running back commit Leshon Williams missed yet another game with an ankle injury this week(his third). Richards still picked up a 37-0 win over Reavis to move to 5-1 on the year. On the season, Williams has 432 yards and 4 TDs on 67 carries (6.5 ypc). He’ll be sidelined at least one more week. Richards will take on Oak Lawn this week.
Quavon Matthews, WR
Hometown: Largo, FL (Largo)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 170
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Wide receiver commit Quavon Matthews and Largo were on a bye this week. Through six games, Matthews has 329 yards and 2 TDs on 13 catches for a 25.3 ypc average. Largo will take on Seminole this week.
Diante Vines, WR
Hometown: Watertown, CT (The Taft School)
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 190
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Fellow wide receiver commit Diante Vines had a monster game last week. He hauled in 10 catches for 101 yards (10.1 ypc) and a TD. Unfortunately, Taft fell to Trinity-Pawling 20-14.
The loss drops Taft to 3-1 on the year. Vines now has 28 catches for 288 yards (10.3 ypc) and 3 touchdowns. Taft will take on Brunswick this week.
Elijah Yelverton, TE
Hometown: Cedar Hill, TX (Trinity Christian)
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 235
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Tight end Elijah Yelverton and Trinity Christian were also on a bye this week. Through 5 games, Yelverton now has 181 yards and 2 TDs on 21 catches (8.6 ypc). Trinity Christian will be host San Antonio Cornerstone this week.
Luke Lachey, TE
Hometown: Grandview Heights, OH (Grandview Heights)
Height: 6’7”
Weight: 220
Stars: 247 Sports - 4 Rivals - 3
Fellow tight end commit Luke Lachey had a rough go this week. He managed only one catch for 8 yards, but it was a touchdown. It was the only score for Grandview Heights, which fell 42-7 to Harvest Prep.
The loss moves Grandview Heights to 4-2 on the year. Lachey now has 26 catches for 314 yards (12.1 ypc) and 5 touchdowns. Grandview Heights will take on Liberty Union this week.
Brenden Deasfernandes, DB
Hometown: Belleville, MI (Belleville)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 161
Stars: 247 Sports - 2 Rivals - 2
Cornerback commit Brenden Deasfernandes added two more tackles last week as Belleville took down Fordson 20-19. The win moves Belleville to 6-0 on the year. Deasfernandes now has 10 tackles and the 1 pass breakup on the season. Belleville will take on Stevenson this week.
Reginald Bracy, DB
Hometown: Mobile, AL (St. Paul’s)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 190
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Safety Reginald Bracy and St. Paul’s were back in action after a bye a week ago. Bracy finished with 7 tackles as St. Paul’s defeated Spanish Fort 35-30 to move to 5-1 on the season. Bracy now has 48 tackles, 4 TFL, 3 sacks, and 3 PBUs on the year. St. Paul’s will take on Saraland this week.
Keylen Gulley, DB
Hometown: Largo, FL (Largo)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 167
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Defensive back Keylen Gulley and Largo were on a bye this week. On the year, Gulley has 20 tackles and 5 PBUs on the season. Largo will take on Seminole this week.
AJ Lawson, DB
Hometown: Decatur, IL (MacArthur)
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 180
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Defensive back AJ Lawson did his part in a losing effort for MacArthur last week. He finished with 4 catches for 70 yards yards as MacArthur lost 48-0 to #1 Glenwood.
The loss moves MacArthur to 3-3 on the season. On the year, Lawson has 24 catches for 395 yards (16.5 ypc) and 4 TDs. MacArthur will host Lanphier this week.
Jay Higgins, LB
Hometown: Indianapolis, IN (Brebeuf Jesuit Prep)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 209

Linebacker commit Jay Higgins continues to impress. He had yet another amazing game this week, finishing with a staggering 23 tackles, including 13 solos, on the defensive side of the ball and added a receiving touchdown on offense. Brebeuf Jesuit took down Terre Haute South Vigo 21-14 to move to 6-1 on the season.
Through 7 games, Higgins now has 102 tackles, 4.5 TFL and 4 PBUs. Brebeuf Jesuit host Cathedral this week.
Ethan Hurkett, LB
Hometown: Cedar Rapids, IA (Xavier)
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 230
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Ethan Hurkett had another solid game for Cedar Rapids Xavier this week, finishing with 5 tackles and a TFL. Xavier moved to 6-0 on the year as they defeated Dubuque Wahlert 42-0.
Hurkett now has 41 tackles, 4 TFL and a fumble recovery through 6 games this year. Xavier will play Western Dubuque this week.
Yahya Black, DE
Hometown: Marshall, MN (Marshall)
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 250
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Defensive end commit Yahya Black also had another solid game on Friday. He finished with 6 tackles, including 2.5 TFLs, as Marshall defeated Worthington 56120 on Friday.
The win moves Marshall to 6-0 on the year. Black now has 40 tackles, 8.5 TFL and 3 sacks. Marshall will host Waseca this week.
Lukas Van Ness, DE
Hometown: Barrington, IL (Barrington)
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 240
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Defensive end Lukas Van Ness finished with 4 tackles, including 1 TFL on Friday, but Barrington fell 21-14 to Conant. The loss drops Barrington to to move to 4-2 on the year. Through 6 games, Van Ness now has 26 tackles, 13 TFL and 2 sacks. Barrington will be at Fremd this week.
Deontae Craig, DE
Hometown: Culver, IN (Culver Academies)
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 235
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
No stats for fellow defensive end Deontae Craig but Culver Academies fell 32-7 to Mishawaka. The loss drops them to 3-4 on the year. Coming into the game Craig had 35 tackles, 14 TFL and 5 sacks for Culver Academies. They’ll take on St. Joseph this week.
Logan Jones, DE
Hometown: Council Bluffs, IA (Lewis Central)
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 252
Stars: 247 Sports - 4 Rivals - 3
Defensive lineman Logan Jones had 2 tackles and a sack as Lewis Central beat Winterset 28-0 to move to 6-0 on the year. Jones has 9 tackles, 3.5 TFL and 2 sacks on the season. Lewis Central will travel to Harlan this week.
Isaiah Bruce, DE
Hometown: Lena, IL (Lena-Winslow)
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 265
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
As we’ve seen all year, no stats for defensive line commit Isaiah Bruce, but he did had a long touchdown run on offense. Lena-Winslow came away with another win on Friday as they took down Orangeville 46-7 to move to 6-0 on the year. They’ll take on Forreston this week.
Tyler Elsbury, OL
Hometown: Byron, IL (Byron)
Height: 6’6”
Weight: 298
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Offensive lineman Tyler Elsbury and Byron beat up on Mendota 55-0 this week. The win moves them to 5-1 on the year. They’ll be at Rockford Lutheran this week.
Josh Volk, OL
Hometown: Cedar Rapids, IA (Xavier)
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 305

Cedar Rapids Xavier OL Josh Volk made his season debut on Friday, recovering from ACL surgery late last season. As mentioned, Xavier defeated Dubuque Wahlert 42-0 last week to move to 6-0 on the year. They’ll take on Western Dubuque this week.
