The Hawkeyes are in the early slate on Saturday, which means Iowa fans will likely miss a bulk of the ranked teams in action this week. Fortunately, not many are featured in intriguing matchups. Instead, most are facing off with inferior opponents.
Those matchups that do feature a pair of ranked opponents happen to be in the afternoon and evening slates. Hawkeye fans rejoice!
Week nights are usually reserved for teams that need the additional exposure of having an evening largely to themselves. That’s getting to be less and less the case as the Big Ten, PAC 12 and others have begun playing week night games. This week, that means we get some decent football on Friday night.
If you’re looking for something to watch (other than the Iowa homecoming parade if you’re in Iowa City) as happy hour comes to an end tonight, ESPN kicks things off at 6pm with Pitt at Syracuse. That should be at least serviceable. And at 7:30 tonight, #4 Ohio State is at Northwestern on BTN.
The 11am slate tomorrow brings us 7 games involving a ranked team. Unfortunately, none of them are terribly intriguing beyond the obvious Iowa vs. Purdue matchup. You can find that on ESPN2.
Other games include #3 Clemson at Louisville on ABC, #5 Oklahoma hosting West Virginia on FOX, #6 Wisconsin at Illinois on BTN, #9 Florida at South Carolina on ESPN and #11 Auburn at Arkansas on the SEC Network.
Things get a little more interesting in the afternoon. At 2:30 CT you can watch #20 Minnesota continue their murderer’s row of a schedule at Rutgers on BTN. Over on CBS you have #2 LSU at Mississippi State. There are a couple non-P5 top-25 teams on ESPN2 and ESPNU. The real game at 2:30 is #12 Oregon at #25 Washington on ABC.
At 3pm, FOX also has #18 Baylor at Oklahoma State and the SEC Network has #22 Missouri at Vanderbilt.
The evening slate is decent. Things get started at 5pm with #10 Georgia trying to get right by hosting Kentucky on ESPN. The PAC-12 Network will have #17 Arizona State at #13 Utah at the same time.
At 6, #15 Texas hosts Kansas. Then at 6:30 you get the game of the week with the two teams to just beat Iowa facing off. That’s #7 Penn State hosting #16 Michigan at 6:30 on ABC.
ESPN gets a little tricky with things by bringing us #1 Alabama hosting Tennessee at 8pm with no 7pm game. Then at 9:15 you have #14 Boise State (that schedule sure looks like a top-15 team to me - NOT) at 2-4 BYU on ESPN2.
And that’s about it for this week. Here’s a look at the entire slate of games Saturday.
