Each week of the high school football season, we break down the performance of each of Iowa’s commits in the recruiting class of 2020. As a reminder, you can keep up to date on all things recruiting by visiting the Iowa Football Recruiting Hub.
It was another disappointing week for the Hawkeyes on the gridiron. In the class of 2020, it was a bit more upbeat as a number of prospects were back in action.
Here’s our weekly look at how they performed.
Deuce Hogan, QB
Hometown: Grapevine, TX (Faith Christian)
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 205
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 4
Quarterback Deuce Hogan came back from his bye week with a solid game last week. He threw for 186 yards and 2 TDs on 18 of 28 passing (64.3%) as Faith Christian beat Frisco Legacy Christian 35-0.
The win moves Faith Christian to 5-1 on the year. Through 6 games, Hogan is 100 of 154 passing (64.9%) for 1,406 yards with 18 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. Faith Christian will take on Prince of Peace Christian next week.
Gavin Williams, RB
Hometown: West Des Moines, IA (Dowling)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 195

Running back Gavin Williams had a monster game this week as he racked up 228 yards and 3 TDs on 17 carries (13.4 ypc). The win moves Dowling to 6-1 on the year. In just four games of action this season, Williams now has 485 yards and 5 TDs on 57 carries for a 8.5 yard per carry average. Dowling will take on Des Moines Hoover this week.
Leshon Williams, RB
Hometown: Oak Lawn, IL (Richards)
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 205
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Fellow running back commit Leshon Williams missed his fourth straight game with an ankle injury this week. Richards still picked up a 47-0 win over Oak Lawn to move to 6-1 on the year. On the season, Williams has 432 yards and 4 TDs on 67 carries (6.5 ypc). Richards will take on Shepard this week.
Quavon Matthews, WR
Hometown: Largo, FL (Largo)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 170
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Wide receiver commit Quavon Matthews had one catch for 30 yards as Largo beat up on Seminole 42-7 this week. The win moves Largo to 5-2 on the year. Through seven games, Matthews has 359 yards and 2 TDs on 14 catches for a 25.6 ypc average. Largo will take on Osceola this week.
Diante Vines, WR
Hometown: Watertown, CT (The Taft School)
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 190
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Fellow wide receiver commit Diante Vines missed last week’s game with a concussion. In his absence,Taft fell to Brunswick 49-28. The loss drops Taft to 3-2 on the year. Vines has 28 catches for 288 yards (10.3 ypc) and 3 touchdowns on the season. Taft will take on Avon Old Farms this week.

Elijah Yelverton, TE
Hometown: Cedar Hill, TX (Trinity Christian)
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 235

Tight end Elijah Yelverton hauled in 4 catches for 55 yards as Trinity Christian defeated San Antonio Cornerstone 24-0 this week. The win moves Trinity Christian to 5-1 on the year. Through 6 games, Yelverton now has 236 yards and 2 TDs on 252 catches (9.4 ypc). Trinity Christian will play McKinney Christian this week.
Luke Lachey, TE
Hometown: Grandview Heights, OH (Grandview Heights)
Height: 6’7”
Weight: 220
Stars: 247 Sports - 4 Rivals - 3
Fellow tight end commit Luke Lachey saw Grandview Heights rely on the run this week as he logged just one catch for 12 yards. The effort did come in a win as Grandview Heights took down Liberty Union 20-13 this week to move to 5-2 on the year.
Lachey now has 27 catches for 326 yards (12.1 ypc) and 5 touchdowns on the season. Grandview Heights will take on Buckeye Valley this week.
Brenden Deasfernandes, DB
Hometown: Belleville, MI (Belleville)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 161
Stars: 247 Sports - 2 Rivals - 2
Cornerback commit Brenden Deasfernandes added 3 tackles and a pass broken up last week as Belleville demolished Stevenson 56-7. The win moves Belleville to 7-0 on the year. Deasfernandes now has 13 tackles and the 2 passes breakup on the season. Belleville will take on Franklin this week.
Reginald Bracy, DB
Hometown: Mobile, AL (St. Paul’s)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 190
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
No stats for safety Reginald Bracy but St. Paul’s suffered a tough loss, falling 28-20 to Saraland. The loss drops St. Paul’s to 5-2 on the season. Bracy had 48 tackles, 4 TFL, 3 sacks, and 3 PBUs on the year coming into the week. St. Paul’s will take on Rain this week.
Keylen Gulley, DB
Hometown: Largo, FL (Largo)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 167
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Defensive back Keylen Gulley had five tackles as Largo beat Seminole 42-7 this week. As mentioned, the win moves Largo to 5-2 this season. On the year, Gulley has 25 tackles and 5 PBUs on the season. Largo will take on Osceola this week.
AJ Lawson, DB
Hometown: Decatur, IL (MacArthur)
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 180
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Defensive back AJ Lawson had another tremendous game on both sides of the ball this week. He had a handful of catches on offense, but made his presence most felt with a 32-yard pick six on the defensive side of the ball. MacArthur took down Lanphier 40-7 to move to 4-3 on the season.
On the year, Lawson has 24 catches for 395 yards (16.5 ypc) and 4 TDs on offense. MacArthur will take on Eisenhower this week.
Jay Higgins, LB
Hometown: Indianapolis, IN (Brebeuf Jesuit Prep)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 209
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Linebacker commit Jay Higgins had yet another incredible game this week. He finished with 18 tackles and a pass broken up. Unfortunately, Brebeuf Jesuit fell to Cathedral 21-7. The loss moves them to move to 6-2 on the season.
Through 8 games, Higgins now has 120 tackles, 4.5 TFL and 5 PBUs. Brebeuf Jesuit will play North Vigo this week.
Ethan Hurkett, LB
Hometown: Cedar Rapids, IA (Xavier)
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 230
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Ethan Hurkett had another good game for Cedar Rapids Xavier this week, finishing with 8 tackles and 2 TFL. Xavier lost for the first time in 32 Friday, falling 20-14 to Western Dubuque. That drops them to 6-1 on the year.
Hurkett now has 49 tackles, 6 TFL and a fumble recovery through 7 games this year. Xavier will play Center Point-Urbana this week.
Yahya Black, DE
Hometown: Marshall, MN (Marshall)
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 250
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Defensive end commit Yahya Black also had another solid game on Friday. He finished with 6 tackles, including a TFL, as Marshall defeated Waseca 27-8 on Friday. The win moves Marshall to 7-0 on the year. Black now has 46 tackles, 9.5 TFL and 3 sacks. Marshall will be at Jordan this week.
Lukas Van Ness, DE
Hometown: Barrington, IL (Barrington)
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 240
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Defensive end Lukas Van Ness finished with 5 tackles, including 2 TFL and added a sack on Friday, but Barrington fell 14-0 to Fremd. The loss drops Barrington to 4-3 on the year. Through 7 games, Van Ness now has 31 tackles, 15 TFL and 3 sacks. Barrington will take on Hoffman Estates this week.
Deontae Craig, DE
Hometown: Culver, IN (Culver Academies)
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 235
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
No stats for fellow defensive end Deontae Craig but Culver Academies took down St. Joseph 42-7 this week. The win moves Culver to 4-4 on the year. Coming into the game Craig had 35 tackles, 14 TFL and 5 sacks for Culver Academies. They’ll take on Bremen this week.
Logan Jones, DE
Hometown: Council Bluffs, IA (Lewis Central)
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 252
Stars: 247 Sports - 4 Rivals - 3
Defensive lineman Logan Jones had 5 tackles, 2.5 TFL and a sack this week. Unfortunately, Lewis Central lost their first game of the year, falling 14-6 to Harlan. That moves them to 6-1 on the year. Jones has 16 tackles, 6 TFL and 3 sacks on the season. Lewis Central will travel to Glenwood this week.
Isaiah Bruce, DE
Hometown: Lena, IL (Lena-Winslow)
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 265
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
As we’ve seen all year, no stats for defensive line commit Isaiah Bruce. Lena-Winslow came away with yet another win on Friday as they took down Forreston 46-14 to move to 7-0 on the year. They’ll take on Galena this week.
Tyler Elsbury, OL
Hometown: Byron, IL (Byron)
Height: 6’6”
Weight: 298
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Offensive lineman Tyler Elsbury and Byron beat Rockford Lutheran 41-6 this week. The win moves them to 6-1 on the year. They’ll take on Genoa-Kingston this week.
Josh Volk, OL
Hometown: Cedar Rapids, IA (Xavier)
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 305
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
As mentioned Cedar Rapids Xavier and OL Josh Volk saw their 32-game win streak come to an end with a 20-14 loss to Western Dubuque. The loss moves Xavier to 6-1 on the year. They’ll take on Center Point-Urbana this week.
