Each week of the high school football season, we break down the performance of each of Iowa’s commits in the recruiting class of 2020. As a reminder, you can keep up to date on all things recruiting by visiting the Iowa Football Recruiting Hub.
It was another big week for Hawkeye commits in the class of 2020. While some members of the class suffered some difficult losses, others managed big wins. Here’s how each of them performed.
Deuce Hogan, QB
Hometown: Grapevine, TX (Faith Christian)
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 205

Quarterback Deuce Hogan hit his first real bump in the road on Friday as he finished 9 of 27 passing (33.3%) for 214 yards and 2 TDs in Faith Christian’s first loss of the season. They fell 49-35 to Canadian.
The loss drops Faith Christian to 4-1 on the year. Through 5 games, Hogan is 82 of 126 passing (65.1%) for 1,222 yards with 16 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. Faith Christian will take on Frisco Legacy Christian this week.
Gavin Williams, RB
Hometown: West Des Moines, IA (Dowling)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 195

Running back Gavin Williams has a solid performance in his second game back from a stress fracture in his foot. He finished with 53 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries (3.5 ypc) as Dowling defeated Ankeny 24-14.
The win moves Dowling to 4-1 on the year. In two games of action, Williams has 201 yards and 1 TD on 35 carries for a 5.7 yard per carry average. Dowling will take on Des Moines Lincoln this week.
Leshon Williams, RB
Hometown: Oak Lawn, IL (Richards)
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 205

Fellow running back commit Leshon Williams missed Friday’s game yet again with an ankle injury. Richards still picked up a 39-13 win over Evergreen Park to move to 4-1 on the year.
On the season, Williams has 432 yards and 4 TDs on 67 carries (6.5 ypc). He’ll likely be sidelined for a couple weeks. Richards will host Reavis this week.
Quavon Matthews, WR
Hometown: Largo, FL (Largo)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 170
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Wide receiver commit Quavon Matthews and Largo bounced back this week. Matthews finished with a very nice 69 yards and 1 TD on 3 catches as Largo took down Clearwater Countryside 42-31.
The win moves Largo to 4-2 on the year. Matthews now has 329 yards and 2 TDs on 13 catches for a 25.3 ypc average. Largo will take on Seminole this week.
Diante Vines, WR
Hometown: Watertown, CT (The Taft School)
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 190
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Fellow wide receiver commit Diante Vines had another big game last week. He hauled in 7 catches for 77 yards (11 ypc) and a TD as Taft took down Williston Northampton 55-28. Vines also added a rushing TD for good measure.
The win moves Taft to 3-0 on the year. Vines now has 18 catches for 187 yards (10.4 ypc) and 2 touchdowns. Taft will take on Trinity-Pawling this week.
Elijah Yelverton, TE
Hometown: Cedar Hill, TX (Trinity Christian)
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 235

Tight end Elijah Yelverton had a nice bounce back game on Friday. He finished with just 6 catches for 55 yards (9.2 ypc) and a touchdown as Trinity Christian rolled Houston St. Thomas 50-0.
The win moves Trinity Christian to 4-1 on the year. Through 5 games, Yelverton now has 181 yards and 2 TDs on 21 catches (8.6 ypc). Trinity Christian will be host San Antonio Cornerstone this week.
Luke Lachey, TE
Hometown: Grandview Heights, OH (Grandview Heights)
Height: 6’7”
Weight: 220
Stars: 247 Sports - 4 Rivals - 3
Fellow tight end commit Luke Lachey had a rough go this week. He managed only one catch for 7 yards as Grandview Heights fell 60-13 to Whitehall-Yearling.
The loss moves Grandview Heights to 4-1 on the year. Lachey now has 25 catches for 306 yards (12.2 ypc) and 4 touchdowns. Grandview Heights is at Harvest Prep this week.
Brenden Deasfernandes, DB
Hometown: Belleville, MI (Belleville)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 161
Stars: 247 Sports - 2 Rivals - 2
Cornerback commit Brenden Deasfernandes added two more tackles last week as Belleville demolished Wayne Memorial 55-0. The win moves Belleville to 5-0 on the year. Deasfernandes now has 8 tackles and the 1 pass breakup on the season. Belleville will take on Fordson this week.
Reginald Bracy, DB
Hometown: Mobile, AL (St. Paul’s)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 190
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Safety Reginald Bracy and St. Paul’s were on a bye this week. St. Paul’s is 4-1 on the season and Bracy has 41 tackles, 4 TFL, 3 sacks, and 3 PBUs. They’llk be back in action against Spanish Fort this week.
Keylen Gulley, DB
Hometown: Largo, FL (Largo)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 167
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Defensive back Keylen Gulley had 4 tackles in Largo’s 42-31 win over Clearwater Countryside last week. As mentioned above, the win moves Largo to 4-2 on the year.
Gulley has 20 tackles and 5 PBUs on the season. Largo will take on Seminole this week.
AJ Lawson, DB
Hometown: Decatur, IL (MacArthur)
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 180
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Defensive back AJ Lawson had a big game on the offensive side of the ball for MacArthur last week. He finished with 128 yards and two touchdowns as MacArthur took down Springfield Southeast 66-35.
The win moves MacArthur to 3-2 on the season. They’ll be at Glenwood this week.

Jay Higgins, LB
Hometown: Indianapolis, IN (Brebeuf Jesuit Prep)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 209

Linebacker commit Jay Higgins had yet another amazing game this week. He finished with 12 tackles on the defensive side of the ball, a blocked punt return for a TD on special teams and a receiving touchdown on offense. Brebeuf Jesuit took down Roncalli 42-14 to move to 5-1 on the season.
Through 6 games, Higgins now has 79 tackles, 4.5 TFL and 4 PBUs. Brebeuf Jesuit will be at Terre Haute South Vigo this week.
Ethan Hurkett, LB
Hometown: Cedar Rapids, IA (Xavier)
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 230
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Ethan Hurkett had another solid game for Cedar Rapids Xavier this week, finishing with 6 tackles and 1.5 TFL. Xavier moved to 5-0 on the year as they defeated Maquoketa 52-20.
Hurkett now has 36 tackles, 3 TFL and a fumble recovery through 5 games this year. Xavier will be at Dubuque Wahlert this week.
Yahya Black, DE
Hometown: Marshall, MN (Marshall)
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 250
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Defensive end commit Yahya Black had another solid game on Friday, finishing with 8 tackles, including a TFL, as Marshall defeated New Ulm 68-0 on Friday.
The win moves Marshall to 5-0 on the year. Black now has 34 tackles, 6 TFL and 3 sacks. Marshall will be at Worthington this week.
Lukas Van Ness, DE
Hometown: Barrington, IL (Barrington)
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 240
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Defensive end Lukas Van Ness also had another big game. He finished with 8 tackles, including 4 TFL, a sack and a pass broken up on Friday. Barrington took down Palatine 24-7 to move to 4-1 on the year.
Through 5 games, Van Ness now has 22 tackles, 12 TFL and 2 sacks. Barrington will host Conant this week.
Deontae Craig, DE
Hometown: Culver, IN (Culver Academies)
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 235
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Fellow defensive end Deontae Craig finished with 4 tackles and 2 sacks last week as Culver Academies hung on to a 9-7 win over Elkhart Memorial. The win moves them to 3-3 on the year
Through 5 games, Craig now has 35 tackles, 14 TFL and 5 sacks for Culver Academies. They’ll take on Mishawaka Marion this week.
Logan Jones, DE
Hometown: Council Bluffs, IA (Lewis Central)
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 252
Stars: 247 Sports - 4 Rivals - 3
Defensive lineman Logan Jones had a TFL as Lewis Central beat Carlisle 48-8 to move to 5-0 on the year. Jones has 7 tackles, 3.5 TFL and a sack on the season.
Lewis Central will host Winterset this week.
Isaiah Bruce, DE
Hometown: Lena, IL (Lena-Winslow)
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 265
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
As we’ve seen all year, no stats for defensive line commit Isaiah Bruce, but Lena-Winslow came away with another win on Friday. They took down Stockton 30-0 to move to 5-0 on the year. They’ll take on Orangeville this week.
Tyler Elsbury, OL
Hometown: Byron, IL (Byron)
Height: 6’6”
Weight: 298
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3
Offensive lineman Tyler Elsbury and Byron beat up on North Boone 54-7 this week. The win moves them to 4-1 on the year. They’ll be at Mendota this week.
Josh Volk, OL
Hometown: Cedar Rapids, IA (Xavier)
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 305

Cedar Rapids Xavier OL Josh Volk remains sidelined due to ACL surgery late last season. As mentioned, Xavier defeated Maquoketa 52-20 last week to move to 5-0 on the year. They’ll be at Dubuque Wahlert this week.
