We’re less than a month since the early signing period for the class of 2019 and only a few weeks from the final signing period, but the Hawkeye coaching staff isn’t solely focused on the class of 2019. Instead, they continue to look to build for the future by getting an early start on the class of 2020.

The class already had three members before today, and tonight they added a fourth as the Iowa staff landed a big time commitment from 3-star in-state running back Gavin Williams. Williams is no longer on social media (EDIT: Williams has now made his announcement via Instagram here), but multiple media outlets confirmed with his mother, Kori, that he was the big get referenced by the Hawkeye staff on Twitter.

Williams is a major pickup for the Hawkeyes in 2020. He chose to stay home over early offers from Michigan, Nebraska and fellow in-state program Iowa State.

As a junior at Southeast Polk, Williams tacked up 1,309 yards and 12 touchdowns on 222 carries for a 5.9 yard per carry average. Southeast Polk made the state semifinals in Class 4A. Williams will be transferring to Dowling Catholic for his senior season.

On the field, Williams brings a lot to the table. He shows a really nice combination of power and maneuverability with his very good frame at 6’ and 195 pounds as a junior. What Hawkeye fans are likely to enjoy most, though, is his plus speed in the open field. In addition to playing football, Williams is a sprinter on the track team, running 10.81 in the 100 meter dash at Drake.

Overall, Williams is commitment No. 4 for the Hawkeyes in the class of 2020. He joins Texas QB Deuce Hogan, Wisconsin DL Michael Lois (who’s future remains up in the air with a neck injury), and Illinois DL Isaiah Bruce.

Welcome to the Hawkeyes Gavin Williams!
