SO LONG, FAREWELL: JACOB COONS LEAVES IOWA FOOTBALL PROGRAM

ANOTHER SCHOLARSHIP SHOE DROPS

Iowa football attrition is the gift that keeps on giving in terms of scholarships.

Jacob Coons, a redshirt freshman at tight end rejoined Twitter last night. I think you know what that means, even if you aren’t on the Twitter with the youths.

Coons was at the bottom of the totem pole in a very crowded tight end room, though of course that may not be the reason why he left the team, as it sounds like he has no intentions of playing football outside Iowa City.

Coons, a Solon native, had just one other offer out of high school: Iowa State. So I wouldn’t necessarily rule out the former three-star recruit from playing elsewhere simply because of this fact either.

His departure from the football program puts Iowa’s scholarship total at 84 by our count. Common sense would tell us that Iowa uses that free scholly on JUCO running back transfer Mekhi Sargent, but common sense isn’t a thing tossed around all the time at the football facility.

Best of luck to Coons in his future endeavors. Once a Hawk always a Hawk.
