Kirk Ferentz may have once resisted the idea of spring official visits, but he relented and scheduled a major recruiting weekend the last weekend before a dead period in college football. He managed to do it the same weekend as Iowa City’s block party, ensuring recruits would see the town alive despite students not being on campus. The move is paying off in a big way.
A day after landing a big time defensive line commit with Jalen Hunt of Michigan, the Hawkeyes kept the momentum going as they landed a major addition with Florida defensive back Dane Belton, who announced his commitment today.

Belton is a consensus 3-star recruit hailing from Tampa, Florida, where he preps at Jesuit High School. He’s got a really good frame for a corner at 6’1” and 185 pounds. He uses that frame to his advantage, going up and challenging receivers and attacking the ball at its highest point. In addition to the frame, Belton has good speed and agility. He flashes solid ball skills in the return game and versatility, playing both corner and safety at the high school level.
He finished his junior season at Jesuit with 56 tackles and 4 interceptions with 4 more passes broken up. That was good enough to earn him 2nd team all-state in Florida’s class 5A (out of 8).
Belton was a highly sought after recruit boasting 26 total offers, including Indiana, Louisville, Maryland, Minnesota, Mizzou, Pitt, Rutgers, Syracuse, Vanderbilt and West Virginia. He made an official to Pitt last weekend, but left without a commitment. A day after visiting Iowa City, he’s now a future Hawkeye.
With the addition of Belton, Iowa’s class of 2019 is now up to 12 members. Belton is the second defensive back commit in the class, joining Illinois’ Sebastian Castro. That will likely wrap up the class’s recruitment of defensive backs, pending a change in the roster composition.
Belton is also the second of the uncommitted players visiting Iowa City this weekend to pledge his name to the Hawkeyes. There are rumors swirling he won’t be the last with Indianapolis offensive lineman Justin Britt and Georgia defensive lineman Tomari Fox the other two players officially visiting who weren’t previously committed. Nine of the ten previously committed players were also on campus with the lone commit missing being the aforementioned Castro.
Welcome aboard Dane Belton!
