Connor McCaffery, the eldest son of Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery and a part-time point guard for Iowa this year will get to spend an additional four years in Iowa City as a student-athlete following the Big Ten’s approval of a medical hardship waiver.
The news isn’t all that surprising, given Connor’s well-documented health struggles which included a sprained ankle, mono and tonsillitis.
The biggest hurdle for gaining the hardship waiver is having doctor-approved documentation that substantiates the ailments of the player, per this nice column Chad Leistikow wrote in February. Since Connor’s athletic trainer and doctors know what they are doing, I don’t think his case took long to review.
So congrats to Connor McCaffery (who plans on redshirting this year in baseball). A bit of good news for the basketball team is always welcome.
