Iowa’s victory over Northwestern was quick and to the point — just the way it should’ve been for the superior Hawks. Using bonus points from four weight classes and two wins over top-10 opponents, third-ranked Iowa finished its season in Carver-Hawkeye Arena with a win.
Starting things at 125, a sluggish Spencer Lee downed ninth-ranked Sebastian Rivera to remain undefeated on the season. The other top-10 win came at 149, where Brandon Sorensen finished his career at Carver with a win over third-ranked Ryan Deakin.
The match went as poorly as possible for the ‘Cats, as Deakin was assessed a technical violation for pulling Sorensen’s headgear in overtime to end the bout. Afterwards, they were dinged one team point for failure to control the mat.
Tech falls came at 157 and 165 for Michael Kemerer and Alex Marinelli, and 141-pounder Vince Turk responded to Carter Happel’s fall Friday with a major to compliment Mitch Bowman’s at 184, giving Iowa a nice looking, more lopsided victory.
Kaleb Young couldn’t defeat No. 17 Johnny Seabstian at 174 for Iowa’s only loss.
Tom Brands and company are back in action next Saturday for a big one in University Park, Pennsylvania against the Nittany Lions.
