Just after we learned about the transfer of Ryan Boyle and the commitment from Logan Klemp, Iowa football appears to have gotten itself another under-the-radar player for the class of 2018 in Kaevon Merriweather, a defensive back from Belleville, Mich.

And when I say under-the-radar ... I mean he has no profile on Rivals or any other major recruiting site (yet). At 6-2, 195 Merriweather has good size, so he may have some flexibility where he plays at Iowa, but his highlight reel is filled exclusively with him at time in the defensive backfield as a safety — save for where he caught a pass on a successful fake punt attempt.
Iowa doesn’t necessarily have a need to fill in the defensive backfield, what with four DB’s signing earlier with the Hawkeyes for this class, I’ll still trust the staff in what they see out of his tape.
Merriweather was perhaps more interested in basketball; his Twitter bio is a link to basketball highlights (below) and he has a profile on a Michigan preps basketball website. This article says Merriweather had an offer to play basketball at Western Michigan, so maybe trying his hand at football at a larger program was appealing to him. Or maybe he’s going to trade scholly’s with Ahmad Wagner and fix Iowa basketball’s woes at point guard.
It’s also perhaps worth noting Iowa has outstanding offers to three of his teammates for the class of 2019: a four-star offensive lineman, a three-star defensive end and a four-star athlete. So perhaps Iowa is trying to build a pipeline here.
Anyway, best of luck to Merriweather. Welcome aboard, and we look forward to seeing you in Black & Gold.
