It might not be the Big Ten Championship that everyone had on their mind when the fall began, but Iowa field hockey has a chance to become conference champs today when they take on Maryland! After a handful of down years, Lisa Cellucci finally has the program back on the right track, as the ladies will play for the 13th Big Ten title in program history.
The Maryland team that stands in their way is a buzzsaw, though. They’re 18-2 on the season and have already defeated the Hawkeyes once, 2-1 in Iowa City a few weeks ago. So far in the Big Ten Championships, they’ve run rampant through the competition - they defeated Michigan State 6-0 last weekend and obliterated #19 Ohio State 9-1 on Friday.
Iowa comes into this game more battle-tested in the tournament. The Hawks defeated #7 Penn State 3-2 last weekend before earning a trip to the finals by way of a thrilling 2-1 victory over #7 Michigan. Beating Maryland today won’t be an easy task, but if this season is any indication, the Hawks will be a tough out - Iowa’s five losses this season have come by a combined six goals.
