Welp, things don’t feel quite as optimistic as they did a week ago following Iowa’s frustrating loss at Penn State. But all is not lost as the Hawkeyes still have a shot at the Big Ten West and sitting at 16th in the first College Football Playoff Rankings, they could still end the year a top ten team. All those things, however, are going to require some help from other teams around the country.
So let’s take a look at who’s playing who this week, shall we?
Note: All times are as the good Lord intended, in the central time zone. Because we’re not savages.
Thursday Games
If it’s a weekday, there’s MACtion and today is no different. Iowa’s week 1 opponent NIU is on CBS Sports Net at 6 as they look to get to the MAC Championship. The other game of note for Iowa fans is at 6:30, when #12 UCF takes on yet another difficult opponent as they host Temple. Sigh. They haven’t played anyone with a pulse all year and they won’t, but Hawkeye fans should be rooting for the Knights to lose as they sit in front of Iowa in the rankings for now.

Saturday Games
Oh baby. Saturday is chalk full of solid matchups with some EXCELLENT ones sprinkled in throughout the day.
In the 11am slot, you can watch Ohio State drop 100 on Nebraska on FOX. ABC has #2 Clemson hosting Louisville. Meh. #20 Texas A&M is at Auburn on ESPN and that one could be interesting. ESPN2 has MSU at Maryland in the Big Ten. And #24 Iowa State is at Kansas. It would be so Iowa State to finally get ranked with some of their nice wins and then fall on their face at KU. Please don’t.
The fun really gets started in the 2:30 time slot, which is unfortunate for Iowa fans. Of course the #16 Hawkeyes are in West Lafeyette taking on Purdue on ESPN2 at that time.
Elsewhere, you’ve got #6 Georgia at #9 Kentucky on CBS. FOX has #13 West Virginia at #17 Texas. For some unknown reason, ABC is carrying unranked Florida State at #21 North Carolina State while they’ve thrown #14 Penn State at #5 Michigan on ESPN. Weird.
Like I said, really good slate at 2:30 so hopefully the Hawks are up by 30 at the half and we can catch some other football goodness.
The evening slate is slightly less exciting with one major exception.
At 6, you’ve got Duke at Miami on ESPN2. Northwestern is hosting #4 Notre Dame on ESPN at 6:15. It feels weird, but we need NW to win this one before losing to us next week. At 6:30, FOX has UCLA at Oregon. ABC’s primetime game at 7 is #7 Oklahoma at Texas Tech.
But the main attraction is #1 Alabama at #3 LSU. That’s also at 7pm. You can find it on CBS. Giggity.
In the night cap, FS1 has USC at Oregon State at 9. ESPN has Cal at #8 Washington State at 9:45. The only other ranked team playing late is #23 Fresno State at UNLV. That’s at 9:30 on CBS Sports Network.
And that’s it, folks. Here’s a look at the full slate for Saturday:

As for the beverages, I think it’s best if we both honor our most hated rivals and also pull one over on them like Lloyd Christmas. Make it four boilermakers.
