Iowa Football Recruiting: Hawkeye Commit Recap, Week of Oct. 22

The Hawkeyes’ playoff hopes dies last week. How many 2019 commits still have their playoff dreams intact?

Other players have gotten a lot of attention this season, but Jack Campbell has had perhaps the most impressive year of any Iowa commit.

With the loss at Penn State last week, the Hawkeyes’ playoff hopes went down the tubes. Several members of Iowa’s recruiting class of 2019, however, still have their playoff hopes alive and well. Here’s our weekly recap of current Hawkeye commit performances last week.

Alex Padilla, QB

Hometown: Greenwood Village, CO (Cherry Creek)
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 195
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3

Quarterback commit Alex Padilla suffered his first real setback of the season this week as Cherry Creek was defeated for the first time. Padilla finished with only 86 yards and one touchdown on 16 of 19 passing as Cherry Creek fell to Grandview 28-21 in double overtime.

On the season, Padilla now has 1,478 passing yards and 20 touchdowns with only 1 interception. He also has two rushing touchdowns.

Cherry Creek falls to 8-1 with the loss. Despite the late loss, Cherry Creek draws the #3 seed in the Colorado class 5A playoffs. They have a first round bye and await the winner of Castle View and Fountain-Fort Carson in two weeks.

Tyler Goodson, RB

Hometown: Suwanee, GA (North Gwinnett)
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 192
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3

Running back commit Tyler Goodson had another incredibly efficient performance in his final regular season game of high school. He carried the ball only 6 times for 39 yards, but found the endzone 4 times as North Gwinnett defeated Peachtree Ridge 42-0.

On the season, Goodson now has 971 rushing yards and 22 rushing touchdowns on 125 carries for a 7.8 yard per carry average. He’s also got a passing touchdown out of the wildcat and a touchdown reception.

North Gwinnett improves to 8-2 on the season. They will face off with Gwinnett Central in the first round of the Georgia class 7A playoffs.

Desmond Hutson, WR

Hometown: Raytown, MO (Raytown)
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 195
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3

Wide receiver commit Desmond Hutson and Raytown were in a first round bye this week.

Hutson finished the regular season with 695 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns on 40 receptions for a 17.4 yard per catch average.

Raytown will take on Belton this week in the second round of the Missouri playoffs.

Logan Lee, TE

Hometown: Orion, IL (Orion)
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 225
Stars: 247 Sports - 4 Rivals - 3

Tight end commit Logan Lee is out for the remainder of his senior season with a lacerated spleen.

Lee finished his senior season with 442 receiving yards with 10 TDs on 26 catches (17.0 ypc). He also has 46 tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss and 15 sacks on the defensive side of the ball.

Orion defeated Fieldcrest 24-21 in the first round of Illinois class 2A playoffs this week. They advance to take on Rockridge in the second round this week.

Josiah Miamen, TE

Hometown: Dunlap, IL (Dunlap)
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 225
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3

Fellow tight end commit Josiah Miamen was held to just one catch for 15 yards, though it was a touchdown, as Dunlap fell to Yorkville 28-21 in the first round of the Illinois class 6A playoffs.

Miamen finishes his senior seas 464 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns on 24 catches for an average of 19.3 yards per reception this year. Dunlap closes out the season 7-3.

Jack Campbell, LB

Hometown: Cedar Falls, IA (Cedar Falls)
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 210
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3

Linebacker commit Jack Campbell led Cedar Falls to a 48-14 victory over Indianola with 14 tackles and a tackle for loss. Campbell now has 120 tackles , 11.5 TFL and 5 sacks on the year.

Cedar Falls moves to 10-0 and advances to the second round of the Iowa class 4A playoffs. They’ll take on Waukee this week.

Jestin Jacobs, LB

Hometown: Clayton, OH (Northmont)
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 205
Stars: 247 Sports - 4 Rivals - 3

Fellow linebacker commit Jestin Jacobs had a pair of tackles, including one for loss, as well as a blocked punt as Northmont closed out their regular season with a 21-6 win over Miamisburg.

Here’s a look at the highlights:

Jacobs finishes his regular season with 30 tackles, 4 sacks and a fumble recovery on defense.

Northmont finishes the year 9-1. They’ll face off with Hilliard Darby in the first round of the Ohio division 1 playoffs.

Sebastian Castro, S

Hometown: Oak Lawn, IL (Richards)
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 198
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3

Safety commit Sebastian Castro also had a pair of tackles this week. He also added 80 yards rushing and a touchdown on the offensive side of theball as Richards cruised to a 49-0 victory over Rock Island in the first round of the Illinois class 6A playoffs.

Here’s a look at the highlights.

On the season Castro now has 44 tackles, including 4 tackles for loss, a pair of interceptions and 4 forced fumbles. On offense, he’s over 300 yards rushing with 8 touchdowns.

Richards movesto 10-0 with the win. They advance to face the same Yorkville team that eliminated Josiah Miamen and Dunlap in the first round.

Dane Belton, CB/S

Hometown: Tampa, FL (Jesuit)
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 185
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3

Fellow defensive back commit Dane Belton had a tackle and a pass broken up on the defensive side of the ball this week. He also added a 36-yard touchdown catch on offense as Tampa Jesuit cruised to a 42-7 win over Middleton.

Here’s a look at the highlights:

Belton now has 33 tackles, 4 passes defended and a pair of interceptions through 9 games this season. Jesuit (8-1) will close out their regular season at Tampa Catholic this week.

Jake Karchinski, DE

Hometown: De Pere, WI (West De Pere)
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 245
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3

Defensive end commit Jake Karchinski and West De Pere continued their playoff run with a win over Freedom 35-6 this week. Karchinski had 3 tackles in the effort.

Karchinski now has 45 tackles, 13 TFL and 6.5 sacks as well as a fumble recovery. West De Pere (11-0) advances to take on Notre Dame Academy (Green Bay) in the third round this week.

Jalen Hunt, DE

Hometown: Belleville, MI (Belleville)
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 250
Stars: 247 Sports - 3 Rivals - 3

Finally, Jalen Hunt also had three tackles as Belleville won their opening round playoff game 28-7 over Dearborn. In addition to his defensive contributions, Hunt also contributed at running back - yes, you read that right. He showed some excellent footwork and balance as he found the endzone from 3 yards out.

Belleville moves to 10-0. They advance to take on Monroe in the second round this week.


Lineman Notes

Offensive line commit Justin Britt remains sidelined with his torn ACL. Warren Central kicked off their playoff push by defeating Ben Davis 49-28 in the first round. They advance to take on Lawrence Central this Friday.

OL commit Noah Fenske and New Hampton finished their season 3-6 and did not make the state playoffs.

Offensive lineman Ezra Miller and Ridge View also finished the year 3-6 and outside the playoffs.

And finally, lineman Tyler Endres and Norwalk were in action this week. Unfortunately they came up short, falling 24-20 to Spencer in the first round of the playoffs.

Here are the highlights:

Norwalk finishes the season 6-4.
