We learned last night that the Iowa State transfer Pat Downey would not be wrestling for the Iowa Hawkeyes this season.
Hawk Central first had the news and quoted Downey via Twitter DM: “No luck on my NCAA waiver.”
He graduated from Iowa State in December 2017 after completing requisite online courses. Iowa accepted him into a graduate program this January.
The volatile 184-pounder spent time at three schools before a final effort to chase an NCAA medal with the Hawkeyes was denied. Though he had a jaded past, he offered Tom Brands a relatively low-risk proposition to fill a position of need, as he would have wrestled for only two months.
Brands was mum on his status throughout much of this year.
