No. 3 Iowa got to an early 14-4 lead over No. 7 Michigan, but the Hawkeyes couldn’t hold on as the Wolverines took the final four matches in the dual to surge to a 19-17 win.
It was a heartbreaker for sure, as Michigan didn’t lead until Adam Coon took a 3-2 decision over Sam Stoll in the final match of the day to give the Maize and Blue a walk-off win.
There were still some things to like from Iowa, though. Spencer Lee is still Spencer Lee. It looked as though he was toying with Michigan’s Drew Mattin and the 15 points he amassed reflect that.
Vince Turk pulled a decision seemingly out of nowhere at 141 over Sal Profaci. It was a weird match that involved a review and a takedown in overtime to give him the decision. Profaci pulled on Turk’s headgear to set him up for a takedown in the final 10 seconds of the match to send it to OT. Turk then got himself another TD to walk off with a win.
Brandon Sorenson pinned Ben Lamantia to stay spotless on the year, what else is new?
Alex Marinelli also surged to 10-0 on the year in a bloodbath over Logan Massa. Marinelli got a double early, and an escape late in the third period for a 3-2 dec.
Michael Kemerer was held out for the match. We suspect it’s a minor injury or ailment since he was suited up and out on the mat for the coin toss. Jeren Glosser wrestled admirably in his place at 157, but fell to Alex Pantaleo 5-2. Can’t help but think that was the catalyst for the dual right there.
Marinelli would be the only Hawkeye to taste victory the rest of the day.
Kaleb Young, Mitch Bowman and Cash Wilcke lost their matches. No. 3 Sam Stoll took the mat against No. 2 Adam Coon, looking to give Iowa the victory and save the upset.
Coon showed he was the superior grappler for three straight periods. Stoll’s only points came from escapes and Coon was able to do whatever he wanted against Stoll.
Next up Minnesota travels to Iowa City on Feb. 2 to take on Iowa to cap off the last four duals of the year.
