Happy New Year!
What better way to sleep off that 2017 hangover than to cozy up on the couch (or get a head start on falling short of your resolutions by bellying up at the local watering hole) with a slate of 5 wonderful college football bowl games?
There are only six bowl games remaining and exactly half of them are part of the College Football Playoff so at this point, they are all essentially must watch TV. Luckily, the kind folks at the Walt Disney Company have made things pretty easy on us all. All the remaining games are on the ESPN/ABC family of networks and today’s games are spread pretty evenly throughout the day so your remote usage should be minimal.
Things get started at 11am CT as the Big Ten looks to go a perfect 8-0 in bowl games this year (it really is incredible how the conference can look when everyone isn’t playing up a level in the pecking order) with Michigan taking on South Carolina in the Outback Bowl. That’s on ESPN2.
A half hour later on the mother ship, new Nebraska head coach and still Central Florida head coach Scott Frost will take on Auburn in the Peach Bowl. I’m sure coaching two FBS football teams for a month has been easy.
At noon, Notre Dame takes on LSU over on ABC in the Citrus Bowl. That’s the last of the overlapping games and the last time you’ll need to worry about changing the channel.
Beginning at 4pm CT, we get into the College Football Playoff matchups. The first one, at 4, is #3 Georgia and #2 Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl on ESPN. I still hate seeing some of these traditional bowls (OK, just the Rose) lose their ties, but this should be a great game.
The day ends with a 7:45pm CT kickoff in the Sugar Bowl, featuring #4 Alabama and #1 Clemson. As much as I didn’t think Alabama deserved to be in, I have to admit I’m here for another showdown in this trilogy. Like the Rose Bowl, this one’s on ESPN.
