Evans is listed anywhere between 6’0 and 6’1, and 190-200 lb. He was named the Illinois Player of the Year last season, where he played QB for Prairie Ridge High School in Crystal Lake, but he’s expected to play wide receiver, according to Derek Young’s writeup. He had other offers from Northern Illinois (who wanted him to be a QB), Minnesota, Iowa State, Illinois, and many others.
Let’s take a look at his junior highlights:
He looks explosive! Although playing wideout will certainly be an initial adjustment, it looks like Evans has nice footwork, speed and field vision. It’s unlikely he’ll play right out of the gate, but who knows what next year will bring. His versatility could certainly prove interesting, depending on what Brian Ferentz wants to do. But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t already imagining some flea flickers and a heavy dosage of end arounds.
Evans will also join his Prairie teammate Jeff Jenkins in the Black and Gold. I think it’s safe to say Jenkins is excited:
I couldn't be more excited for my best friend and teammate! Hard work pays off you deserve everything you have gotten! #swarm18 https://t.co/WMVaRLCil8

Jenkins is a 3-star OG so it makes a lot of sense that the two would be close on the field and off it. Here’s a story from AllHawkeyes with another quote from Jenkins. It should make for a great storyline when both of them start hitting the field in a couple years.
Evans is the 5th addition to the Class of 2018, joining Jenkins, running back/receiver Tyrone Tracy, defensive lineman Tyler Linderbaum, running back Henry Geil and linebacker Dillon Doyle.
A burst of athleticism is exactly what the Hawkeyes will be needing, so let’s hope Samson can create some big plays in the years to come. Welcome, Samson Evans!
