Commitment Post: Hawkeyes Land Jack Plumb
Wisconsin-native Jack Plumb was a big time get for the Hawkeyes in the class of 2018, and not just due to his literal size. Plumb is the rare case of a Wisconsin kid the Badgers were after, but chose to commit elsewhere. He announced his decision to play for Iowa back in June. Today it became official as Plumb signed his national letter of intent during the first ever early signing period.

Plumb is an even more interesting case as he’s a guy that will be changing positions at the collegiate level. For his Bay Port high school team, he lined up as a tight end. However, with his sheer size at 6’8” and now north of 250 lbs, he was used almost exclusively as a blocker except in goal line situations. He finished with only 5 catches for 85 yards, but a pair of TDs.
The Hawkeyes see him in a similar light and recruited him as an offensive lineman. Iowa’s long history of converting players into NFL-caliber OL is a primary reason Plumb chose them over his home state Badgers. He’ll look to spend his first season adding some mass to his 6’8” frame and then embark on the journey to be the next Riley Reiff or Robert Gallery, moving from a skill position in high school to a big time offensive lineman.
While the position change will no doubt mean plenty of things to work on from a technique perspective, you can see from his video why the staff likes him at OL. He has good feet for a lineman and the athleticism to get out in space. He also shows a bit of a mean streak and does an excellent job of finishing his blocks - both things you love to see from a tackle.
Plumb is one of three offensive line commits in the class of 2018 for Iowa, joining fellow Wisconsin-native (though from the opposite side of the state) Cody Ince and Illinois-native Jeff Jenkins. The Hawkeyes have been looking to bring in 3-4 offensive linemen in each class and that’s right where they stand now. They’ll lose Ike Boettger, Boone Myers and Sean Welsh to graduation this year. It’s also a possibility James Daniels leaves for the NFL, though not necessarily probable.
Plumb is one of three players in Iowa’s class of 2018 from the state of Wisconsin. He joins the aforementioned Ince from Balsam Lake and RB commit Henry Geil, who’s from the Green Bay area like Plumb. Plumb is the only of the three to report an offer from the home state Wisconsin Badgers.
Here’s a look at the full list of commitments in the class of 2018.
