Iowa City Duals: Hawkeye Wrestling goes 3-0

Roll, baby, roll

Much to the surprise of every Hawkeye fan inside Carver over the weekend, the Iowa wrestling team is 3-0 after the Iowa City Duals, winning 27 of 30 matches — 20 via bonus points. Iowa downed Iowa Central 48-0, Buffalo 33-6, and North Dakota State 38-6.

Some highlights:

  • Brandon Sorensen, Michael Kemerer, and Joey Gunther picked up bonus points in all three matches. Sorensen went pin, tech fall, major, while Kemerer picked up a pair of falls before finishing things off with a tech. Gunther, your starter at 141 pounds, picked up a tech fall, major, and tech fall to begin his first campaign as the guy for Tom Brands.
  • Heavyweight Sam Stoll was back competing in all three duals, ending his first and third bouts with pins in his return to the mat after missing the majority of last season with knee issues. He needed overtime to take out No. 20 Jake Bunning of Buffalo, but it’s good to see the big fella back in action.
  • Brands pulled the redshirt of freshman 125-pounder Justin Stickley — making him the first true freshman to compete since Nathan Burak’s first year — who managed to pin his ICCC opponent before losing his next two bouts. He’ll have to yield better results to keep Spencer Lee off his tail.
  • Iowa’s third loss of the day came from Paul Glynn at 133. He dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 5 Bryan Lantry. Phil Laux won against ICCC and NDSU in the other two bouts.
  • Five combined bonus point victories from Kaleb Young, Joey Gunther, and Mitch Bowman at 165, 174, and 184, respectively. Not bad, not bad at all.
  • Iowa’s back in action Friday night against Rider in CHA, so we’ll have results for that early next week. Enjoy your turkey, Hawk fans.
